Question

I just read on another bulletin board about a chap who installed a turntable in his drive so he could drive forwards into and out of his driveway.

Another poster on the board stated that it is an offence to reverse into or out of your drive if you live on a main road, I find that difficult to believe.

Can anyone enlighten me here?

It is an offence to reverse onto a maind road from a side street. Not sure whether this applies to a dwelling.

Yes Matt I am sure that applies to reversing from a dwelling too, but this chap stated it was an offence to reverse into your drive.

Sounds weird. If it is an offence to reverse into or out of your drive on a main road, the drive becomes legally useless unless either you have a turntable or you have an in-and-out drive. Given the average British town layout, I find that thoroughly difficult to believe.

Perhaps it's a more general thing, such as an offence to reverse out from the "side street" (as above), or an offence to reverse round a corner during heavy traffic - a sort of careless driving catch-all.

I think you can reverse into your drive because you are not reversing onto a main road as you would be if you reversed out of it. Outside my work we have the same problem so we reverse in and drive out. Keeps the old bill happy.

Well if you can't reverse in AND you can't reverse out you need to have the sideways skills of SDB - otherwise once you drive in forwards you're stuck there for good.

Unless of course this was a law put into force by envious Messerschmitt drives

Ok it seems you are all in agreement with me, the guy on the other board probably got it wrong, it really didnt make sense but there are other laws that don't make sense to me!

if it's illegal to do both, surely a good solicitor would point this out when buying the house. I.e. no vehicle access.

The guy with the turntable lives in Bracknell...just down the road from me. I can't ask as I don't know him. But the road is busy so he had a stoned covered turntable installed ......

As a separate note, approx 300yds from there , a young single mum was knocked down and killed last week. Perhaps a sign of why the road is dangerous?

Hang on - I'll go and get mine out of the car.

<pause>

Reversing into a drive is fine. You should not reverse in heavy traffic, and you MUST not reverse onto a main road.

I travel along a peice of 4 lane 50 MPH road to work every morning. There are accidents at least 2-3 times a week where people think it is appropriate to reverse across all 4 lanes :scarey smiley:

How do they define a "main road"?

As a cheaper alterantive - drive on forwards, accelerate, yank handbrake, spin wheel - sorted!
