Question

I have been working on a replacement bonnet in carbon fibre and need a few questions answered.
I will be a new shape, lighter than the alloy bonnet, have a symetrical main scoop so it can be turned round for the front mount intercooler cars.
The questions are -
1) Hinges or bonnet pins
2) Through bonnet titanium bolts or hidden hinge bolts
3) Pre moulded side scoops/vents or non at all
4) One piece carbon mat or joins down the crease lines
5) Front grill as is or moulded to bonnet
6) would you want one

Thanks for your help, once I have these answers and an idea of demand I will post more details and a guide price.

Nigel.

This is a great idea and thanks for throwing it open.

Can I suggest an option of open or closed scoop, as it has been shown that reversing the scop is not so useful as removing it all together.

I would also suggest the evo type vents at the front directly behing the rad and intercoolers.

These would aid enormously in getting air flow out from behind the heat exchangers making them more efficient.

The heat haze in any evo 6 is testimony to how effective it would be.

Combining the grille would alienate me as a 22B driver which has the front grille combined with the bumber and so cannot be separated.

Hinges would be a nicer idea cosmetically, as would retaining the original bonnet catch.

If all this comes together I would certainly be interested, as would several others I would have thought.

seems the mad tuner is busy at work

When talking about vents, are we talking ala normal scooby bonnet vents, or additional scoops such as both of us have on our bonnets?

tempted but happy with the bonnet at the moment, plus need to save to get the AP's and downpipe

Cool

Nigel,

I would be very interested. I've been looking for someone who knows a bit about composite materials. Perhaps you could get in touch.

Cheers

Ok, bit more info ...
The guy going to be making them is ex-Williams F1, Ascari racing etc ... so he knows a thing or three about this stuff.
Weight should be at least half that of the alloy bonnet, if not lighter.
All normal bonnet catches and vents could be retained, or a totally new vent, scoop, WRC vent added ...

TopCat, why fiberglass ... very little difference in cost?

Will keep you all posted

Nigel

Forgot to ask, would you need to paint the bonnet? IE would the finish of the carbon fibre be good enough to have exposed?

Nigel,

I think standard catches would definitely be a good idea.

Perhaps doa front mount and non front mount version.

One with more vents for letting heat out ala evo 6 and a standard copy of original version.

Nigel,

Maxy hit the nail on the head I do not like the finish on the carbon I would pref a black one to match the rest of the car my reason to change is for no top scoop.

I tell you what If you can design a bung to fit where the top scoop goes, I know it will not be flush but hey what we are talking about is a plate, fibre glass or ali to replace the scoop.

I think this would be cheaper for you guys and those with FMIC who want the top scoop taken off with the option to replace as and when. I would be up for that and I know other who would be interested in that also.

Let me know.

If your wondering I already have a ali bonnet:-)

Good idea Moe, will work on that aswell.

The finish will be show quality, as on our bikes. This can be colour laquered to have a body colour and the hint of carbon showing through, clear laquered, painted or just left alone.

Can I make a suggestion of using Gas type struts as used on BMW, that way there is full access to engine compartment without the arm thingy you wedge the bonnet up with getting in the way.(just adds a bit more trick styling.)

I quite like the idea of a bonnet for cars with FMIC, how about something like that on the Trial car (thanks Mr. Tang ) ie a nice vent near the rad:

But none of the rest of the body kit

Sounds good, an indication of price would be good...?

extra cooling would also be good, but you must consider whats under where the extra cooling is...
