Advice on power hike

Advice on power hike
I've had my 97 type R for nearly 2 +1/2 years and has remained standard until now (apart from handling mods)
I plan a power/torque upgrade, not bothered about actual figures, just faster but reliabilty is key as i plan to track my car more.
Below is what I plan to do with a few questions as I'm not sure on all of it.
I've bought:
Apexi v3/v4 chip + commander
walbro 255LPH fuel pump
colder spark plugs
I plan on buying:
FMIC (flat4online?)
Exhaust(turbo back with sports cat in downpipe)
Induction kit (so many to choose from)
Oil breather kit
Do i need a fuel pressure regulator with this?
What sort of DV do i need ( i have a forge VTA fitted but still have plastic OEM one too)
any ideas on exhaust-don't want it too loud for track regs.
Would it be OK to fit FMIC, Exhaust, and induction kit and then drive it to a tuners, or is this gonna risk blowing the engine (hear loads of horror stories of imports with new exhausts but not mapping them!)
Cheers
Dill

Just a few points based on my own experience (I have a V4 Type R). With a turbo back decat and remap it made 322bhp / 270 ft lbs...
For the best price/performance, you can't beat a good exhaust and remap. Mine went from 272bhp to 322bhp (although on different dynos). For me to improve any further I would need bigger injectors, FMIC, induction kit, and unless I replace the turbo as well I still would not get over 350bhp. And of course 350-ish is also asking a lot of the clutch and gearbox.

I've bought:
Apexi v3/v4 chip + commander Good
walbro 255LPH fuel pump Good
colder spark plugs Good, my mapper recommended NGK PFR7B's
I plan on buying:
FMIC (flat4online?) Depends, your 440cc injectors will be the limiting factor (mine are at 99% on a 1.2 bar map), and so unless you upgrade them, you won't be running enough boost to need a better intercooler.
Exhaust(turbo back with sports cat in downpipe) If it were me I'd go for a 3" system, either from Hayward and Scott or Revolution. (If you're getting a sports CAT downpipe then Revolution are cheaper.
Induction kit (so many to choose from). Only needed if you go for the FMIC
Oil breather kit - certainly won't do any harm.
Do I need a fuel pressure regulator with this? Mine's running fine with the std reg, although if you can afford it, it will allow you to get more out of your injectors.
What sort of DV do i need ( i have a forge VTA fitted but still have plastic OEM one too) assuming you keep the TMIC I personally would use the std dump valve.
any ideas on exhaust-don't want it too loud for track regs.
Would it be OK to fit FMIC, Exhaust, and induction kit and then drive it to a tuners, or is this gonna risk blowing the engine (hear loads of horror stories of imports with new exhausts but not mapping them!) Definately not recommended. I'd ask the person you will get to do the remap - it would be very risky to drive it there IMO.

Good point re: FMIC on trackdays.
If I do anything more to my car it will be based around Laterals MD321H turbo...

Until I can afford all the bits needed to make the most of it, I'll stick with what I've got.

i'm not interested in bigger turbos etc, just see what i can get out of, what is already a pretty good car. Brakes, will be next although. not had any real dramas yet, 'went off' a little on a session at donny but thats about it, were fine at silverstone, and castle coombe last year.
On top of power uograde, wanna a lighter flywheel and pulleys? dunno if it needs remapping for that as i've heard it can be not very smooth on idle with these?
Above all, reliabiltyis the key

Hi Dill,
I've also got a V4 STI Type R
Below is the list of mods. Very similar to what you what you have planned.
Engine Rebuilt by API - Standard STI Spec
Uprated Lighter flywheel
Uprated Clutch
550 Injectors
Uprated Fuel Pump
Milsport FMIC
STI 5 Turbo - Exchanged by API
HKS Exhaust
Inductiopn kit (Can't remember the make
Forge Recirc DV
Apexi PFC. Mapped on Tesco 99
Complete refurb of standard 4pots and uprated.
I've not had it tested on an RR but dhould be putting out betwween 330 - 350 or I'd have API's guts.....
Not bad for a car that sits on the drive for 5 days of the week. Track beckons this year though.
Hope this helps.
Give a call to either
Milsport
or
API. Both have a wealth of experience.
Regards
Esh
