Default Poor Mans RB320

Currently on the lookout for a good priced MY06 STI. Love the looks of the RB320 which got me thinking. With the standard WRX being so cheap at the moment (£13695 ) it got me thinking of buying a brand new wrx and modding.

New 07 Black WRX £14000
290bhp upgrade from Powerstation £1300
18" Black alloys £600
Lowered springs £?
Maybe brake upgrade £?
Spoiler £300?
Alloy mesh grille £?
Leather re-trim £650

Total Cost somewhere around £18k I would guess. Can get a 56reg STI for 19k but after new 18" black alloys and leater retrim would be £20.5k. £3k difference and older car, would it be worth it.

Hopefully get a small amount of money back too for standard exhaust, alloys/tyres, etc as would all be like new.

Good or Bad idea?

My only worries at the moment would be warranty and whether it would be worth much more than a standard WRX come resale?

Also any comments or pointers on doing any of the above cheaper would be gratefully received

Talk it over with your dealer, if they are any good they wont mind most mods as lang as you talk it over with them first.

got a few things done to mine including a full decat and an Andy Forrest remap amongst others , had a couple of warranty issues fixed no problem.

The dealer I got mine at has no problem with track days etc as well, even encourages it to a degree!!!

Dealers make a pretty penny from warranty repairs.

Dont let them fool you. Yes they get audited but if they are good enough then they should have it covered

If you are happy with that level of power and can sacrifice the warranty then go for it. However, if you are after more you will find it harder to extract power WRX vs STi due to better cams etc on the STi.

i.e. you will be always wishing you had bought the STi.

Buy a WRX you will always be wondering?

Buy an STi and there is no wondering just looking forwards

Buy the STi - Its that easy, theres so much more in the STi than a wrx as to a bit of power, everything is different. Go for the STi, and spend money on it over time

Quite a few people on here are STI crazy and would never recommend buying anything other than one of those. It has always surprised me when people say how great they are and then mod them as if to say they weren't as good as they made out in the first place.

I've a standard WRX, i'm happy with it's performance, it's the fastest car i've ever owned and it has features that I prefer over the STI (plus a few magazines said the WRX is a better bet as an every day drive). I know it's down to personaly preference but sometimes I think there is an element of snobbery on here and the Sports/WRX's get looked down on.

I personally like your idea of buying a WRX and modding it to make it similar, I wouldn't take it too far though or people won't see the car as a good Impreza they will look at it as one that's trying to get 'badged up' as something it's not. Would you really like it to be refered to as the 'Poor Mans RB320' as in your title?

DON'T MOD, JUST BUY AN STI IN THE FIRST PLACE

keep it standard and you will also geta better return on it than you would on a modded wrx

The 07 WRX is £21,495. Are you talking about the non turbo version?

I picked up my brand new Scooby on 2nd Dec '06. It is a WRX Wagon and RRP is £21,500.00. I did get a good deal on it £16,500.00, but £14,000.00 seems a bit low. If it is an import, I would rather pay a bit more and get it from a dealer with the 3 yr warranty. In terms of modding it, I have got PPP on it (£1,700.00) and also had it lowered 25mm (£250.00), I have ordered the bumper kit and rear spoiler for another £500.00.
If you are going to get an import, then you could get other performance packs that might work out cheaper. Good luck anyway mate, what ever you decide.
