Default Checking Oil Level

OK stupid question time. Should you check your oil level when the engine is hot or cold??

Cheers

Hot or Cold, doesn't matter - as long as the engine has been turned off for at least 15 minutes and it's on a flat surface.

Hot or Cold makes no real world difference to the Engine Oil level.

Thanks to Pete/Janspeed.

I've been told to only do when warmed up, but I've always doubted that! And given the amount of oil my car drinks I wanted to be sure I was putting the right amount in

Cheers

Martin,
How much does yours drink? Mine is about 250cl per 250 miles. Do you find the dipstick tends to be inaccurate?

thats seems like a lot too me BS!

I presume you mean ml or cc instead of cl as 250 cl = 2.5L

have you got leaks though?

Mine would drop 500ml in 1500 miles.

Yes the dipstick can be really difficult to read.

Mine does about 1lt every 1000 miles or so as well... what have you got?

Since new, coming up 2.5 years. I think it was the first of the 2005's. I think forged pistons are the answer and I'm quite happy about that consumption as it has always been the same. Why does one side of the dipstick read different to the other???

Absolutely as bought, except for lots of tyres. Very tempted by the new one but, the price? end of a model type? depreciation? Perhaps more interested in the proposed hatchback - might be lighter too!

Have you had any issues with your rear suspension?

Not directly, although it has all been changed to find a clunking noise that proved to be the diff. in the end. Have mystery noise at the moment that only happens occassionally and sounds like the exhaust knocking (which it isn't)
