WRX instead of an STi - Selling myself short?
as said in my other thread i am looking for my first Scooby.
I am not up with all the model names and numbers, but was looking at a Bug eye, but now prefer the model after ???eye???
Looking on Autotrader etc seems that within my budget i have a massive choice of WRX's.
Now, would it be wise for me to save a bit more etc and get an STI.
I do regular track days in any car i own (currently a 182 CUP) and usually go to the 'ring once a year, so you could say i like the best performance out of my cars.
Now if i just buy now and get a WRX am i going ot be missing out on the performance etc of a STI and be regretting it 6 months down the line?
Also on a side note, can you get STi's in red, all i seem to find is blue or silver!!
So if you have read through all that, please advise!
many thanks to anyone who replies!!

Whats your price bracket?
If your looking at the 'Blobeye' i would highly recommend the MY05 STi version (2005 onwards) as it comes with the DCCD-A (Driver Controlled Centre Diff - with Auto mode).. essentially eliminates some of the power-understeer the earlier Imprezas suffered from with a computer controlled active centre diff (moving torque front to back dependant on G-Sensor/Steering position feedback)
Probably 15k+ though.

if you perceive yourself modding in the future (which you will probably do no matter how much you deny it now) then both the WRX are great starting points but the STi is a few rungs up the ladder to start with.

As said no real difference between a std WRX and your 182 clio. Go for the STi.
However if you are a regular track day user be aware of the following
1. The Standard STi brakes are not up to track use, especially at the ring. After 15 hard laps the brake judder will be ripping your arms off. A £2000 upgrade to big AP's is what is required, although they have still yet to be proven to me.
2. The STi will understeer like a pig when pushed hard. Again to sort it people will try to sell you £2K worth of upgrades to fix this.
3. You will go through wheel bearings and carriers quickly. Most people who use them on track have had them replaced at least once.
4. They are greedy on tyres
5. They are greedy on fuel
6. They are greedy on brake pads.
I have been this route myself and when I sat down and worked out how much it would cost me to make the STi a competant track car I decided to spend half that money and build a dedicated track car instead.
By the way your 182 clio will probably be as much fun as either the WRX or an STi.
My comments are purely track based by the way.

the idea of getting a scooby was to have a car quick enough etc etc to not have to tune, as my current clio has 4 pots, roll cage etc etc.
looking at around 13k, might be able to stretch to 14-15k with a bit of saving.

Probably looking right at the top of your price bracket to get one though.. but well worth the extra money.

Then another £2K on a brake upgrade, £300 for a set of pads, £600 for a set of tyres. Might just break the budget

@ Nearly new ugly beast !
They did more than just make them ugly when they 'ditched' the classic design you know. I suppose it depends what you are after. The newage, from Bugeye onwards was a def a step in the right direction for a smoother more refined drive, which if you plan to use the car on a daily basis for your family matters. The MAF is stronger and more reliable and the ECU is much more intelligent (sometimes too intelligent according to the mapper who worked on my car) giving a more robust product.
WRX or STi - Test drive them both and see what suits your way of using the car. I have a TDi so my subaru isn't a long distance driver. I bought a bugeye WRX (funds at the time), but have since stuck on STi spoiler, suspension, Whiteline ARB and STi wheels, so I wish I'd bought an STi to start with. The WRX, as standard, is an easier drive, whereas the STi feels more aggressive and urgent (commenting on Newage only). The classic STi is very raw to drive, more of a track day animal IMO.

had a wrx and recently changed to an sti, there is absolutley no comparison between the two.the sti is far superior in everything except comfort.its far more responsive on the throttle, handling, steering etc etc.treat yourself to an sti.
