Picture this, i live in droylsden in manchester, to get to my house from the city centre there are two roads around droylsden centre, one of which has now got speed bumps recently put on the road, so now everyone goes on the road with no bumps on it and causes heavy traffic and the road with bumps on is virtually empty!
The way i see it is, if we pay road tax to fill in pot holes and bumps on the road, why are they putting bumps on the road????
Am i right????

you're right - i have just moved from sth manchester and was not happy when they put speed humps in, followed soon after by traffic calming things (you know the ones, where you have to give way randomly to traffic from the other direction). I counted 10 smashes there in 6 months - and that was only whilst I was around!
now in scotland - shopping centre near us has speed humps that kiss the front skirt of the p1 as you go over them - we've only been shopping there once......

The local council has a legal obligation to make sure that the roads are free of obstructions. A speed hump counts as an obstruction.
There are guidelines about how high it is allowed to be and what angle it can rise up at, you name it.
If your car is unmodified and passes a "type approval test" (MOT will do) then you're entitled to be able to drive it about without hitting some lump of tarmac that the council has placed in the middle of the road.
If their speed hump has dented your bumper, send them a bill for the replacement. Councils always pay up as technically the speed hump counts as an obstruction in the road. If enough people sue their *** then maybe they'll get rid of the buggers.

On my way to work I have to go "over" about 6 speed bumps, but the ones at junctions which begin with a kerb, go over keyed paving, then back down a curb.
They are a mare!! Too high, rough, and to make matters worse I drive an MR2 with very stiff suspension as standard. I loosen my teeth driving over dog turds, never mind massive bloody humps.
They also dont slow down the "nutters" in the Novas etc who still take them at speed.

The trouble is, some motorist (my mates ) take the bumps slow but it encourages them to speed on roads without bumps because they cant in our area.
It seem to have its good and BAD points, just more bad than good.
Cheers

Consider yourselves lucky!
In the area where I live, I have to go over 7 or 8 eight just to get from my house to the main road! They've a speed ramp at every junction, and wherever a cycle path goes over the road. Some of them are almost certainly of an illegal height, causing considerable damage to cars driving well under 30mph!
Whilst the council went mad with ours, some estates only have them on half the roads, and others have none at all. Makes having a P1 a bit dangerous! I can't go over them any faster than 15mph. I suppose it's coincidence that I've already had new dampers and front drive shafts!
As in most thing in life, all we ask for is consistency, but things like these ramps are scattered around at random. There's absolutley no point in that appraoch, as it will simply encourage all the traffic down other residential areas that have less, or none. Half the traffic on my estate uses a tiny little road as a shortcut, as it only has 1 ramp, and means you can bypass 2 others!
Where's the sense in that?
