Best Car for £16k ish?

![Question](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Ok people, I need your advice.
I have just managed to total my moded '93 WRX
(not a difficult job with insurance companies attitudes these days ) and as such I am in the market for a new car.
I have decided that although you get so much more VFM when you buy a modded car it causes all sorts of issues with servicing, MOT's etc, not to mention insurance, so I am looking for relatively standard UK car.
I have about £16k to spend and want something with all the mod cons, quite fast (sub 6 to 60mph), and handles well. I doesn't have to be too practical (2 seats is fine but more is not a problem) but it does have to be an everyday car (so a Caterham is out of the question) and if its a convertible its a bonus.
Now I know this is a Subaru forum so am expecting (and wanting) some advice on newer model Subarus (a comparison to a 300ish BHP classic wouldn't hurt) but please don't be afraid to go to the dark side and recommend other makes of car.
My thoughts at the moment are a 2003 WRX STi Type-UK PPP, (say it quietly) an Evo7 FQ-300 or a 2001 Porsche Boxster S.
Tell me what you think.
Cheers Alistair

Easy, buy my car a 320 bhp classic with a properly rebuilt engine and get a Lotus Elise S1 and with the remaining cash pay the insurance ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Both cars pretty much depreciation proof and much better than getting one car that would probably be slower than both in different situations

Scoobynutter555,
Nice car and I bet that API rebuild runs sweet but to be honest I have been down the classic route and to me mods are personal thing and I would be constantly thinking this is nice but I wish it had that so and so off my old one. Also I only want to run one car (I currently run 2 and cant be bothered any more).
Good luck with the sale

BMW Z3 M Roadster. Yes, Z3's are haridressers cars, but the M has the same 3 litre engine as an M3, in a tiny Z3. Think they're around 320BHP, and in such a tiny car with rear wheel drive, apparently they're quite insanely scary. They hit 62 in around 5.4 I believe. The coupe (see below) is faster.
You can buy them for 12-15k quite easily without too much mileage.
If you can spend a little more, you may want to look at the M Coupe. It's similar to the Roadster, but isn't convertable and looks a bit better. Apparently it's also faster and more powerful.

For £16k i would get a spec C or a JDM STi.
If contemplating other marques, then an Evo 8. Or if i needed some economy, get a TDi, like the vRS to get less smiles but more miles.

Ultimately, guess it is down to what sort of thing you want size wise. Not a big fan on the Porsche myself so I'd be tempted to go for an STi or Evo.

Man those Swed's are nutters, just watched the vid on youtube
Ghostrider vs. BMW Z3 M Coupe
Hadn't thought of a BMW to be honest so I will give it a look
as for the Spec C I had a bit of a look round and I thought they were a bit out of my price range closer to 18-19k? got any more details of the different spec C models, years, equipment etc? also don't all the Jap ones need a remap to handle our petrol safely ?
As for the Evo's I thought the general consensus was that the Evo had lost a bit of its magic with the 8 and 9 hence I was looking at the 7, anybody had any of them ?
thanks again Alistair

However, I think you'll find that the 8 was certainly a step back in the right direction. I've never driven a 9 so can't say, but the 8 IMHO was a better car than the 7 and a lot better looking. However it is not as harsh as the 6 was, but just as fast and composed.
Need to make sure you pick the right colour in 'em as well, trust me

Sadam - Nice Spec C but I think it might be a bit moded for my long term insurance needs (I.E. getting some an anything other than a limited milage policy) will have to check the costs but still an option
MrRA - after GAZ sugested Spec C's earlier I went looking again and found that but I would never get my fat arese in those Buckets (or more to the point I would never get it out!!!) plus isn't it the early ordinary one that doesnt have all the mod cons (air con etc)? as I want this as my main car for a while to come I would like something with a a higer degree of comfort really
Chip - tempting but too much of a toy, wouldn't it be nice if Pug at ually made a version like that to compete with the Clio V6 ......ooooh clio V6 not a bad Idea?
Matt - Sweeeeeeeeeet Evo I have never driven one so before I go wasting anyones time I think I will get myself down to a dealer and see if I like them then I may well be in touch
ok guys some nice stuff coming up here but as I said I would like something not moded so I can get some ordinary insurance, one of the main reasons for this is if it doesn't already have mods then I am hoping I will be able to stop myself from starting the process, I got a bit addicted last time and spent about the purchase price of the car again on mods which we all know is money down the drain

AliG - adding mods to your car doesn't add too much to the insurance costs and doesn't result in limited mileage policies.
My Spec C is insured for 20,000 miles per year, including business use, use abroad, my points, the mods, use by my partner (with her 6 points) all for under £1k a year.
