Hi all, im looking at upgrading from a 1.6 to a 96 uk turbo 2000 with 90k on the clock. Could you please list the things you would be looking out for when buying a car of this age? Just for starters, its got the following spec to my knowledge
-cambelt changed at 72k
-new brakes all round
-new radiator last year
-standard with only a full through exhaust and filter as mods
-nice paintwork
-long tax
What other things should i look out for mechanically?
Thanks in advance

check the expansion bottle for white/grey gunk as this could indicate problems. a couple that i have looked at have had this so i have been informed to stay well away!!!
also check for "piston slap". apparently many scoobs can do this when cold but as long as it stops when warm it should be ok (so i been told, still new to the scooby scene myself).

thanks for the replies, will have to get my engine diagram out to find where some of the parts are! It has a full through blitz exhaust and K and N induction kit, standard cats still on i think,so it shouldnt need a remap yet should it? I'll take off the induction kit though cuz altough K and N have a good reputation ive heard turbos go through mafs like no-ones business with oil based filters, am i right?

Yer true, i think i'll get bored of the induction noise in the end, id prefer to listen to the exhaust (or maybe a dv
). I've seen a few uk turbos with 120,000-150,000 on the clock still going on original engines, as long as its been looked after do you think it'll be good for a few years yet, or is it a lottery really?

I loved the sound of the induction kit on mine, you could really hear it breathing properly, guess it may annoy some people though.
I'd guess with any 10yo+ car you are really having to make the decision about it based on what it looks like now and how you think it's been treated. Any car that's been well looked after should go on for a long time IMO.
Before I bought the new scoob I had an Audi 4.2QS Avant and it had far more faults with it (hence the reason I swapped to a scoob again) than the old 94 had when I'd got rid of it.
