Default Who runs illegal reg plates?

Just interested really. I often see pictures in the gallery section of cars with badly spaced or incorrect font plates.

For a year I ran badly spaced plates on my scoob and nothing happened. They I got two pulls in one week by the same copper (who I went to school with). I decided he was on my case, gave up and put the legal ones back on.

I often see old people driving round in normal cars with illegal plates and wonder just how they get away with it?

So how many of you have been stopped and fined and have any of you had a plate taken off you for repeat offending?

Saw a year old range rover with classic black/silver plates on yesterday, can't imagine why he/she/it never gets pulled ?

I was stopped and given a £30 fine. I've usually had no problem with the police but when I got done for this you'd have thought I'd murdered someone. Measured it all up exactly, even though I was happy to just take the fine and go home.

Mines legal font size and spacing, just made from reflective vynyl and a little smaller sized than a regular sized plate.

A newbie copper commented on it a while ago, but the experienced officer, pointed out that the font looked like the right size and spacing so left me alone.

BTW this is only on the front of my car.

I don't run a front plate. It is a $51.50 fine...I have had to pay it once.

With increasing reliance on ANPR systems I reckon they are tightening up on plates.

mine is a scaled down size, correct spacing and font, still illegal though

not as small as the one on my old classic and i didn't have a tug in that in 3 years plenty of coppers had a look at it but as it's not taking the pi55 i'm hoping that's why they've left it alone. only takes one on a bad day but i'll risk it for £30

When I had my elise I used to run it without a front plate all the time as it was constantly getting caught on stuff and coming off and never got pulled once. Having said that my scoobs pp is completely legit. I can't see the point in messing around with it, ultimately it just gives the police and excuse to pull you over and the more times they do that the more likely they are to find something else that isn't to their satisfaction - tyres, emissions even, or that pint you just had

Used to run a front plate with standard letters and equal spacing but trimed so that the white was 10mm around the letters (still rectangular - not like those silly carbon & white border letters only things). Only had 5 letters on the plate so was quite small - never had any bother as obvious I was taking the pi$$ or try to mis-represent things.

What I want to know is how are the golfs etc getting away with using pressed metal german style plates/letters - can they argue EU equality (if so wouldn't mind a small french numberplate on the bike).

My mate had an Evo 6 and got pulled by the coppers coz he was driving rather quickly!! They couldn't prove what speed he was doing so picked up on his number plates (Motor bike size). He got given a producer, swapped them to norma onesl, then after he went to the police station, took them off and put the old ones on !!

Ran the same plate on both Scoobs for 3 years nothing untill last week when i got pulled on a Saturday morning. T5 came screaming out of a layby and pulled me. Just gave me a slip to get stamped at an mot station to say the plates have been changed.
The crime was having no space betweeb the numbers and letters.

Sadly the plate itself has to be BS marked - BS AU 145d - the reflective film type plates dont have this. But your average bobby is not going to be that bothered - or even know! RPU is another story though - they tend to be on the ball.

Like someone said - its all about ANPR etc etc.

<whispers>PS - I have a stick on plate on my Caterham.. never had any problems in 7 years.</whispers>

Got stopped on M60 for having fancy lettering on the plate, by 3 traffic cops and boxed me in with a video unit, ended up with £30 fine and a lecture, gone legal now.
Only had them on for 3 days, not worth the hassel.

key is to leave some legal ones in with your spare tyre, that way you can chuck them on the dash and parcel shelf and blag your way out of it.

I took mine off about 6 weeks ago to put the grille kit on.

I never put it back on. The wifey tried with some new sticky pads, but it fell back off. And off it's stayed. Not intentially, just keep forgetting about it.

People lOOk at it funny sometimes, and a bike copper definitely nodded down towards the plate when he was coming at me.

It will go back on, but in all fairness, couldn't you just say it's fallen/been pulled off? And you're off to B&Q to get new sticky tape??

I see hundreds of crazy plates. Some you can't read until you're well close. I don't see the point myself

I've got them on mine and never had a problem as they are clearly visable and easy to read. If i do get pulled i'll just say i was at a show and i'll get my proper ones put back on

I had black and silver plates on my punto (thought it looked good with the black car/wheels theme). It only got mentioned twice in 9 or so months, once by a traffic copper on a bike, as he pulled me for speeding . and the second time when I was on London Bridge, where they do random checks as it was the height of the july bombings. When I told them they were show plates, and I'd just been to a meet, he was lauginh, as he couldn't believe that Punto owners meet up
