Default STI rear shocks & warranty

My LHS rear shock has recently started knocking, just when I was thinking I was safe from the problem after three years without trouble The car was out of warranty in October last year, but as this is such a common, well known fault, has anyone tried their luck at getting one replaced out of warranty? If not, does anyone know approx how much it will cost to get it replaced?

Cheers :-)

Both my rears were replaced 1 year out of warranty, but the car had only done 23,000 miles.
It was a "good will gesture", but I had to pay for labour.
I seem to remember the shocks are ~£230 +vat +fitting EACH (I think)

It's got to be worth ringing your dealer and asking the question. With it being such a common fault, I would imagine you have a fairly good chance of getting some sort of good-will gesture similar to the one above.

I have just had the NSR shock replaced on my STI and it is 4 years old now.

You have nothing to lose, I think it will depend on if it has full SUBARU main dealer service stamps.

Good luck

What are the tell tale signs that you have this problem or are getting it?

I have a MY05 STI so would this effect me?

Thanks in advance

You would know. And it gets louder too. A definite creaking/knocking, can hear it when over bumps/potholes.

I don't think it affects MY05. Cause of the suspension revision. Just 03/04.

This is a very common problem, I have had both rears done at 13k both fronts done at around 20k and guess what it's back in week Thursday for another set of rears at 29k And this is on a my 06 STI. This is all under waranty and the rears I got on now are supposed to be the modified ones which havn't lasted any longer than the originals

As Ken has said, the Rear Shock have an average life of about 15k miles although the 05 onward shocks are different sizes they still going wrong

Scooby newbies would pick up the noise quite quickly on Per-DCCD cars. bUT By it's nature DCCD makes noises and is getting the blame for the knocking rather than the strut

IMHO

Dccd is quiet now with all the mileage on mine Tony, but another tail tail sign is when you stop at lights the suspension settles down about about an inch then rises again on the corner with the faulty shock. If you jack the car up and grab the wheel firmly you can also feel the play in the shock absorber. Thought Subaru whould have sorted this problem out by now

Had both front and backs replaced on MY05STI.

But the sticking rears are starting again, took into Dealers who said cant find fault? But I drive the car and know it is sticking due to I know what it feels like as it sets off.

I cannot believe that people are still suffering with this problem. This should have been sorted out years ago

Not knowing much about all that tech stuff, did'nt know they have to replace both shocks (why). My near side shock went 2 weeks ago put it in last week and got it it all done for £580 really pleased with the price as it was done under warrenty.

they replace both sides as if one goes the other will follow, but dont bother as whatever "modified" units they fit will fail again.

Cant be bothered with another set for mine.

The rears on my '03 were replaced at 10,000 miles because of the knocking but started knocking again just after 20,000 miles.
It now has 40,000 miles on it still with the occasional knock.

I rang my local Subaru dealer yesterday and asked if there any chance of replacements as a 'good will gesture' as the car is out of the warrenty period.
They called Subaru UK to find out and got back to me with the answer... No chance.

They did say to bring the car in for the mechanic to have a look at as he has fixed many a Subaru with knocking struts with a modification that he has come up with.
Does anyone know of said mod?
