Exclamation Watch out car tax will be going up

Looks like our eco-warrior Chancellor is after 'gas guzzlers'

BBC NEWS | Business | Budget 'to hit gas guzzlers hard'

I'm guessing that this new tax will be on emissions and scoobies are not good on those. I'm just hoping that this will apply to new cars and not retrospectively as happened last time.

I understand that those without CATs will be subject to a £1500 road tax ... and I say, "Quite rightly too"!!!

More likely he will raise the road tax on cars in band G (over 210g/km) disproportionately - this includes just about every Subaru, though the news will bill it as a tax on 4x4s.

There is a way round this - buy a car that is X reg or older - their road tax isn't rated on emissions.

The Budget's green measures fall short of those demanded by environmental lobbyists, some of whom have called for road tax to be raised to over £1,000 for polluting vehicles.
I call for all environmental lobbyists to be hung at the earliest opportunity, after all they are carbon dioxide generating oxygen thieves that have no real purpose other than to distort facts and attempt to impose their own rose tinted view on the rest of us. And Ill do it tax-free

So glad I didn't buy a newer Scoob than I did now as have a X reg. If this increase does happen for 2001 onwards cars then I'll stick with Classics for a while yet.

I think this is a deliberate piece of mis-information leaked by the government. Get all people with those cars affected all worried about having to pay £400 per year in road tax, and then breath a sigh of relief and thank Gordon for *only* putting it up by £100.

Yes it is. Basically cars registered befor March 2001 are split into two bands - Under 1500cc and over.

Of course there is nothing stop him raising the over 1500cc band by a large amount.

From an environmental perspective it would not make sense to penalise older cars, since this will make them more likely to be scrapped, and what's the point in that?

(As the owner of an older car) I'm all for penalising new cars, as this will push manufacturers to develop better cars.

This isn't done from an environmental perspective (bearing in mind we don't actually know the details). Putting the tax up on existing cars is just TAX, it doesn't change how much that car is used.

Extra tax on fuel would have an effect on car usage, so at least that has some 'green' logic. Higher car tax is Gordon's socialist background showing through.

That's the way it came across in my paper this morning. Those vehicles registered after march last year, and therefore currently paying £210 will be hit hard and less painful increases for the other bands.
Whilst I agree that there could be global warming, the effect of removing the higher emissions cars and replacing them with something lower will, I suspect, have no measurable effect on anything! It's just tax, plain and simple.
The ironic thing is that I'm not getting good value for money in terms of the road tax I pay and the miles I do, so I might just start using the car MORE!

Good to hear.

I think if he raised that it would cause a revolution, half the cars in the country would be affected, but knowing this government...

Tax makes no difference at all to driving habits, a very negligble difference at best. Taxation is a simple excuse for Money generation for govt spending. I would have nothing against £10 increase in car tax if that £10 was used to buy swathes of rain forest and protect it.

If measures were done for genuine 'environmental' reasons then there is a whole host of things to do :-

Ban any new outof town shopping centres.
Stop the relentless march of Tescos closing local shops and forcing people into cars to get their shopping.
Tax break companies who give provision for staff to work from home and activly encourage it whereever possible.
Give police imediate stop and search powers for any vehicle who has no MOT, Tax or insurance (that isnt listed as stolen of course) any that fail instantly are crushed/recylced no appeal at all. (7m vehicles estimated are illegal).

These measures extreme as some are, would reduce congestion and also reduce car dependency and useage. Vote for me

what i can't work out is are we not taxed enough already? With the taxes paid on petrol, surely if we choose to run a less efficient car then we pay more taxes through petrol duty, why are we penalised again??

Can't print what I think of the man - this Green Tax is a load of b*llcks and is simply another way of taxing people - it will make no diff. The money raised from this type of tax will not go to changing the climate conservation. He has already spent this money on something else. Along with about £20bn

I did heard on the radio that they would be putting up the cost of 4* 4 ownership on road tax. but as you say my small sportscar falls into the same bracket and thus will cost me tons even though it is smaller than a mondeo

The other problem is the term 4 x 4

The fiat Panda do a 4 x4 is that included!!!!!!!

what about Audi's quattro system where it is mainly 2 wheel drive brings in the other 2 as and when needed is this a 4 x4???

They need some very discrete terms for a 4 x4

I think like if it is taller than XX and longer than XX and has the ability of 4 x4 all the time and has an engine size of greater than XX

or pump out XX CO2/ kgm per mile etcetc.

You need to get range rover, land rover, X3's, X5's lexus , Rav4's, toerags, cayannes and the like and not penalise the fiat panda, audi, scoobies etc of the world

well if you believe the global warming debate scoobies are one of the worst offenders (incidentally i dont believe in it). So to make an exception on scoobies would be wrong on Carbon grounds. If though I totally agree the whole concept of carbon taxing a complete load of rubbish, its revenue grabbing that's all, fortunatly the country is a little more savvy these days and these idiots at least will get their deserts soon at the ballot box.

As i said you want to make an evironmental change then govt damn well do something concrete. What is the £10 or whatever it is flight levy going to be spent on? You can bet its not spent on making all british airports have energy efficient lightbulbs, more like giving a new 4 bedroom house to some toerag chav with 85 kids.

I'm not so sure HM Govt wouldn't do that mate ! (Their justification would be that older cars are less efficient with regard to emmissions).

Problem is, it does not matter if you kick them out. No new government is going to undo the "green initiatives" that Labour are putting into place
