hi - what are the tell tale signs that the head gasket/s are knackered?

losing water, take of the oil cap and see if thers a whitish "mayo" looking gunk, also if the hoses on the rad are rock hard it means they are pressurising from a failed head gasket (although they will pressure up quite a bit anyway), running too hot or even hotter than normal.
a gargae can do a test for you easily enough, may cost you £10+ but you will know either way.
