TURBO KIDS SNUB
(sorry if its a repost)
BOY racers have made a 150mph Japanese car almost uninsurable.
After paying £1million in claims for high-speed shunts involving turbopowered Subaru Imprezas, nearly every British policy company is now even refusing to offer Group 19 cover.
With early second-hand models priced at £1,500, speed-loving teens have opted to buy 220bhp "Scoobys" but have found themselves unable to cope with the rally-style performance.
Admitting older drivers are also being hit, one firm said: "Youngsters are making too many claims. It must stop."

It would be easy enough for an insurance company to massively decrease the premium over a certain age (say 25 or 30 years old) - the driver not hte car ! - if it was "youngsters" causing all the problems.
My old car was an S2000; RWD, no Traction Control, Group 20 and known for swapping ends. The Scooby is more expensive to insure

somethings happened somewhere!
to insure an st205 GT FOUR, wich has 4wd 255bhp engine and are quite rare compared to imprezas it cost me to insure 850 quid! this car was also a jap import! it was getting old so i sold it brought an my00 uk impreza wich again has 4wd but only 220 hp (if that!) and then i pay over twice as much!
whats with that! GT FOUR was way fookin quicker!

Strange they say
"nearly every British policy company is now even refusing to offer Group 19 cover."
I'm 25 and am having no problem getting quotes for 03-05 STI's. The figure comes to the same as anything comparable (M3, Evo, etc). It does cost more to insure a classic than a blob though, which seems crazy really!

Not much sympathy for the insurance companies here: it's not rocket science: don't insure youngsters on Imprezas If they are responsible for an disproportionate number of claims!
Many companies now -very sensibly- in my opinion insist on several years NCB before they'll even contemplate insuring you on a high performance car if you're under 25.
Many simply won't insure under 25s on Group 17 and above.
As for the older drivers complaining: shop around, find a company that won't insure young uns with no experience on high performance cars and get a competitive quote there.
Also, don't expect Impreza insurance for Mondeo money; it is a performance car after all! You play, you pay!

I'm 31, 6 points (1 x SP50 3 years ago), 1 years NCB (my named driver had a prang on my policy) and one no-fault accident (someone drove into the back of me).
That costs me £1500 !!!!!!!!!!

I was paying £890 on a MY99 UK Turbo all mods covered (wheels, zorst, ecu, suspension etc). Now paying £480 on my UK Integra Type R.

i couldnt believe it when ecar came back at me with £1750 fully comp considering my circumstances.
22 yr old male
no ncb
9 months driving experience
0 points
homeowner etc
everyone else wanted £3000-3500 off me, hence why i nearly bought an old skool 205 gti...
apparently its for three reasons, two of which are down to me (i asked on the phone)
1. being 22 i fell into 21-25 rather than 17-20 age group... immediate decrease they say regardless of experience
2. they insure cars for my age up until group 17.... uk turbo ins. group 17 lol. wrx 20 etc. etc.
3. they only do online quotes. the phones are for queries only so they pass on the savings.
and before anyone says their service must also be ****... its not, it really is top draw compared to other "top" companies.
after my serious crash last year, ive slowed down a lot anyway, so im not one of those youngsters in a nackered old wrx.... well not now anyway
plus ive never claimed on my insurance(s)

29yrs my06 sti
£750 i think, 9 yrs ncb, protected.
I also have a KA for dailly runs, which is about £175, both with elephant.
i did try Adrian Flux (the performance and modified people) who came back and said they could only insure me on the KA?!?!?
From 01wrx - 03sti - 06sti i have seen a drop in the amount i pay over the last 4 years.

51 Plate Bugeye WRX Wagon here, £168 for the next two months on my policy with Admiral (eugh!). If i Move now, I loose the years NCB so have to get my pants pulled down for a bit with those pirates.
Looking like it will be ~£900 for next year Comp. 25yo Male, 3yr NCB, 8 Years driving, no crashes or points. Homeowner and daddy too. Also got my partner on the policy, 26yo Female, 2 years driving, no crashes or points. Ironically my premium drops a few hundered pounds when she is added!!!
Postcode is low risk as its the middle of nowhere I live!
Cant understand how younger guys at 21 or so with less NCB get quotes in the £1500-£2000 range. Are these quotes fully comp?

To be honest I'd support a plan to bring the type of graduated levels that motorcycles have to cars. The fact that someone can pass their test and, as long as they have deep pockets, get into any car they choose - be it a 1.2 Clio, 300bhp STI, or a Ferrari 360 is utter madness.
At 28, I still consider myself pretty young to have a 300bhp car; allowing an 18yo to drive one is, in my opinon, idiotic. I appriciate that there are capable, sensible 18yo drivers out there, but unfortunatly in the minority.
