Default CAT C write off's

I understand it that CAT C write offs are those which are defined as a vehicle with a repair cost higher than the value of the vehicle.

If an 03 plate impreza STI is worth book price of £12,250 and it has an accident resulting in it being written off then am i roughly on the right track with how insurers look at writing it off.

Vehicle value - £12,250

Vehicle salvage worth - £4500

So the cost of repair would have to exceed £7750 for it to be written off (£12,250 minus £4500)

I dont know what salvage is worth so dont take it as a true estimate, they could be worth more it depends on whats damaged obviously.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lets say tho that the damage was this.

O\s wishbone, tie bar, hub and alloy wheel

Would that put an 03 plate with below average milles into the CAT C bracket... remember the car has a book value of £12,250

Cheers, views welcome

Cat c is where the cost of repair is over 60% of the vehicles value. Ive repaired many and it generally costs alot less than that. The insures work on a price which includes main dealer or insurance approved man hours, genuine or insurance approved new panels/parts. I bought a y reg saxo which was cat c that needed only a wing and steering rack and a r reg punto sporting that needed a door, b post and rear quater which was cat d.The saxo was by far the cheapest and easiest to repair. So its all down to the insurance asser at the end of the day.

If your seriously considering this cat c, get a 4 wheel lazer alignment done by a independant body repair specialist, if they already have one its most probably from the place of repair, upto you if you accept that but for piece of mind take it elsewhere for the sake of £50, and get them to check the car over aswell!

So my little demonstration wasn't to far out then. I know hourly rates are rather silly in some places, i dare not even guess. Luckly my mate owns a repair garage and i've never had to pay for anything other than parts. (cost price too.. )

I am slightly suspicious as the parts which have been replaced due to damage could have been done in a day.

so say £100 hour.. over the top for fun... Insurers will only pay x amount of hours depending upon the job to be completed.

give 10 hours so thats a grand. plus parts what would you say price wise.. ??
