I bought a second hand subaru Legacy turbo a few years ago J-reg 94,000 miles on the clock...have you seen the film 'The Money Pit'... radiator, head gasket, clutch the bloody works went wrong on the thing!!! Bloody fun to drive I tell you and it was an estate.

All car parts are consumables in the longer term, even if the service book has been stamped regularly. 95k is a lot of miles. A younger or less driven car has a lower probability of something major going wrong. No guarantees either way though.
If the price is low enough to compensate for the increased chance of major repairs coming your way soon, then maybe its worth it. How much were they asking?

depends how long your going to keep it. chances are when you get rid its going to be over 100.000 miles. so just ask your self would you buy a scoob thats done over 100.000 miles.?????? also depends on price now and what you may get for it when you try and sell it.

My Impreza is for sale at that price. Mine has a full history but the engine went at 90k. A rebuild at a reputable garage will cost around 3k, and as you'll know many classic engines go pop after a few years. Mine cost around 5.5k with all the bits and pieces I got done at the time, only a few months ago.
When I was looking for a classic I wanted one only with a recent rebuild or one with a knackered engine (rebuild myself at a proper garage) so I wouldn't be left at the side of the road pulling my plonker and 3k lighter.

Yes, I said many, I didn't specify a percentage. Don't see what the confusion is about, call any well known Subaru rebuilder and ask their opinion. I was under the impression the engine on classics was a well known and reported weak link, do a search for 'oh **** my engine has blown up, how much will it cost'

Wrong I'm afraid. There's many an owner that's looked after their car and properly serviced it and it's still gone pop. Obviously it won't help matters if you thrash the thing, but how is a second hand buyer to know how you've driven the car?

surely a well looked after 90,000 mile engine with full history will be fine. BUT you have to take into account what mods this car has and how much power it is putting out above standard and how long internals have been treated plus isit still on original clutch.
i dont know much but i try to help, thats what we are here for

Before it was stolen last year, my previous turbo wagon had almost 120k on it. I had it from 72k and the only non-consumable items I had to replace on it were the rear shock-absorbers.

im in a similar dilemma myself. i have a seen a few nice scoobs but some have had high miles. theres one that has 91k on a w reg thats totally standard, only had 1 previous owner and has a FSH, totally immaculate. its up for £4200. the only problem i have is that while it probably is a very good car when i come to resell it in 2 years (as then i will be getting an sti ) it will be over a 100k and most people wont buy a car with over a 100k on the clock (although if it said 90k they wouldnt be as bothered???). so, im thinking if i get something nearer the 70k mark at least it wont be over a 100k when i come to sell it.
then the next question is do i get a car thats totally standard or one that has been remapped etc?
ive got one to hopefully look at that is totally standard with a fsh and 78k on a 99 v reg. this guy has owned it 3 years (on another point how come so many owners sell up after having it only a month or so, ive spoke to loads like this......and then put the phone down!!!). its in dark metallic blue, mid leval spoiler, colour coded skirts.

I assume with the buyers that have the car for a short amount of time that they can't afford to run it or didn't realise the running costs involved. Most Imprezas average around the mid twenty mpg, much less if rocking on.

Any second hand car that has no warranty is a risk. Imprezas are no different to any other car. Don't be frightened by scaremongeres..... Lots of Japenese spec cars go POP as they're run on the wrong fuel.

There's an awful lot of people who have gone a long way past the 100k mark with no problems at all. There are people (a very small percentage admittedly) who have looked after engines perfectly and still had them go bang at low milages. Ultimately, the scoob engine will hold up as well as most cars and better than some. Most well looked after ones at 100k will still have a fair bit of life left in them, but you might be unlucky. Having said that, most at 60k will have a bit more life left in them than 100k cars, but you might still be unlucky.
Proportionately, japanese imports need a lot more careful looking after (remap and/or high octane fuel with octane booster, for example) otherwise they're a lot more likely to fail sooner.
