Lightbulb MY07 STi - 1st service oil..?

Ok, I don't want to start a mass debate on this and yes, I have done a search and can't find the answer.

My MY07 STi is going in to Walldonway next week for it's 1000 mile service.

I've heard that a lot of dealers use Castrol magnatec, which (I hear/read) is not a particularly good oil for our cars.

So I'm looking for some switched on advice on what oil to take along with me when I turn up next week. Do I go straight to fully synth at this stage or to a semi synth until my next oil change..?

My old servicing place (Barretts Motorsport) in Canterbury aren't there any more, so I'm in the wilderness here. They used Castrol RS, which I now see is replaced by Castrol Edge Sport 10w-60. What's this stuff like..?

Cheers in advance,
Nige.

Give Alyn a call @ AS Performance on 0191 410 3770 he'll sort you out. Castrol RS wasn't a true synthetic btw.

Depends what you are doing with the car... any plans for track days, 1/4ms etc? If the car is standard (or PPP), will only do road work then magantec or what ever the dealer normally uses will be fine (Subaru wouldn't let them put it in the cars if it wasn't).

If the car is weekend only and gets a hard life then look at putting a more expensive oil in.

My 06 PPP has Shell Helix in it via Prosport, my old MY98 PPP had 120k on it and only had magnatec in it from new and my old modified MY93 used to get Motul or Castrol RS @ 4.5k changes..... all 3 cars never missed a beat.

Tony.

A semi-synth hydro-cracked mineral based oil such as Castrol is fine for the first 10k or so, allowing the components to continue to bed in. After 10k I'd switch to a quality fully-synth such as Silkolene ProS, Fuchs Titan Supersyn or Motul 300V. The engine won't be truly at its best until after 30k anyway.

Yes, don't put a full-synthetic oil in yet. For the first 4-5k use an "ordinary" semi-synthetic to allow the engine to bed-in properly.
Millers, for instance strongly advise against full-syn on new or re-built engines and do in fact produce an oil specifically for running-in. Not saying you need to use that but, forget the full-syn stuff for a while.

I just ask the Dealer for their Full Synth oil when it goes in. Job done.

And I wonder if your invoice says it has nice expensive fully synth, but the trainee doing the job fills it with the left over Coke from his McD lunch

I'm having my 1000 service next week as well.Just going with whatever they put in it,mainly cos it's free !

Will get some Silkolene proS for the 12 month service though,it's due in November so not that far away.

Isn't it just the labour that is free?

Yep, you pay for the materials. Labour is covered by Subaru.

Unless he negotiated a deal that included the first 1000mile service FOC...

What sort of price are you looking at for the 1000mile service on average??

Cheers,
Grant
