Apart from the rear struts what could knock when driving over uneven surfaces? The car is a 05 STI, I had a 03 STI with the knocking struts but this sounds different. Could it be the exhaust (got PPP) or boot lid?

my PPP 03 sti exhaust hits the rear diff, it's pissed me off enough now. I'm just home from work with some jubilee clips which i'm going to attach to the hannger on the back box to stop it working its way through the rubber mount.
I was worried for a while that it could be the strutts... good gob its not!

Usually starts with the left rear. Seems to knock when at slow speeds i.e. maneuvering in/out of the drive or leaving/slowing down for junctions or traffic lights. Also when you stop you can feel the car 'sit down' at the rear. The best way is to push down on the back of the car and you should hear it knock. Unfortunately my noise dosen`t happen at these times and sometimes doesn`t happen at all which makes it more annoying!

Two issues with rear knocking:
1. Rear struts, good decription by COLZO.
2. Rear windscreen fixings. there are some lugs at the top of the screen which creak. Drives you nuts and can occur at any speed. fix is to turn the radio up or remove the lugs. Undo the headlining and cut the lugs, if Subaru do it it is a screen out job.
Subaru dealers should be well aware of tech bulletins on both issues.

MattW - the noise is a knock rather than a creak defo think is something metallic. Viewed your SCOOBY and saw my next car
take it no rattles or creaks there!

Nope, no rattles on that. Had four Imprezas and an Evo and this is a league apart!

That doesn't sound like my knocking - am goin to double check everything is secure in the boot, and it isn't the exhaust, but its booked int he dealer next week for a service so they're going to take a look....

Sounds stupid but if your jack is hand tight give it another quarter turn with a screwdriver or jack wrench. Just eliminates another possibility.

I wrap mine in a rag then use a little 3" bar to give it a good tweak as its awkward to use anything bigger. Remember to keep the bar in the car!
Cheers, Diccy.
