what sort of power do you need for 'x' times at 1/4 mile drag?
looking at the threads of the scooby live times and for some reason i wondered what sort of spec is needed to post decent times?
trouble is nowadays a sub 12 sec 1/4 doesn't sound as fast as it should (if that makes sense?) talk of 9 second passes sort of dulls down how fast you need to be to break under 13s
so, what sort of power is needed for what sort of times? my old classic did a shade over 14s with un-mapped full decat, so to use this as an example would it need another 50bhp to get mid 13's or is it more than this?
understand there is a bit more than just horsepower to get figures, but say i wanted a 12 second car what would i need?

thing is with 1/4 times the small diffferences in time are hugley different on the track... 1/2 a second at 100mph is 25m ish to get a standard 300hp scoob from say 13.4 to 12.4 would i'd guess take (leaving the car the same weight) another 100bhp+. and a 12.4 is quicker than most production cars other than supercars costing 150k+. dipping into the 11's in a scoob and your looking at 400-450bhp and that includes a fair bit of weight reduction...
11's are reserved only for hyper cars and people with alot of time and money, especially if you want to try it more than once.... 10's are purely cars used on track and hace little road going manners and under this then its a drag car with little resemblance to a road car other than the shape...
Saying all that the maddest thing i've ever seen accelerate was a top fuel dragster do a 4.6 pass at 332 mph in the states and it was like a large bomb going off on the line and then it was gone, and i mean gone... a funy car did a 4.9 at 310 the same day too... mad!

As standard my STI (RR 275bhp/240lbtq) best 1/4 was 13.2s@105mph
Had a few mods done (RRc.300/bhp/280lbtq) and best now is 12.5s@109mph
I've tried getting my head around BHP and tq of different cars and FWD/RWD/4WD. learning how to launch properly will lower your times the most.

Am kinda curious to see if it would do it.......But just couldn't bare to subject my car to the required abuse to achieve the best Qtr mile!

The problem with 1/4 mile times is that there is such a varying amount of results, this could be because some people are better 1/4 mile drivers than others, and other cars are better setup for the strip. Dill_typeR is achieving mid 12's with 300/280 when other drivers may not be able to get this time with over 350bhp.... Driver skill and launch technique makes up over 50% of a 1/4 mile time IMO....
There are a lot of car's that have the potential of getting some quick times... How many get them is a different question.

Also weight too, i think i weighed my car at 1320kg with full fuel and me.
Thats with rear seats and passenger seat removed plus spare wheel and jack, which i think is much lighter than a new age.
Also RR results are hard to compare between different dynos too, mine was 296bhp but since had fuelling altered a bit at the top end.
Back wind does help

I got a 12.9 in my sti5 type r when the car was totally standard so roughly 280bhp.
Lots of days under the bonnet and a few quid later it was making 412/400 and did a 12.0, still at full weight. Not a hugh improvement for almost half as much power again. I will get into the eleven's but I'm under no illusions of how difficult it is to make meaningful improvements.

You don't need big bhp for a fast car or quick times.
Mine is quite basic @340bhp and has done 11.7secs @119mph.
Can compete with some 450-500bhp+ builds and drives home everytime after a day of racing.

When my 1998 wagon was rolling roaded at Well Lane it was 245bhp........boost was set as close as I could to fuel cut. It had a full Magnex decat and a Blitz Spec S EBC. At this point my best 1/4 mile was 14.04.
After that I added a FCD and upped the boost to around 1.39 bar and my 1/4 miles were a single best of 13.56 and several around the 13.76 mark.
I estimate that power was around the 260 to 270bhp mark, but I'm not sure.
I'm fancying another Impreza now (well..........I am having one), but I fancy a 2004/5 model..........I wonder how much power I'll need to make it faster than my old one? 300bhp?? Any suggestions?
