Subaru powered VW beetle
#1
Hello everyone
There's a discussion going on on a VW forum about putting a Subaru engine in a Beetle
http://www.jazzdesign.co.uk/cgi-bin/ubb_totalvw/Forum1/HTML/001693.html
We need some input from anybody on Scoobynet with regard to some technical aspects of the Subaru engine. At the moment the discussion is centred around using one of the standard Subaru engines.
Does anybody know what the torque curve specs are for these engines? Graphs, dyno outputs etc
Does anybody know the weights of the various standard Subaru boxer engines?
Thanks in advance and Merry Xmas!
Stuart

For dyno plots, look no further than http://dyno.scoobynet.co.uk. There you'll find plots for just about every conceivable combination of Subaru engines and modifications.

Nah, in principle it's the same layout; flat 4 but the beetle has the camshaft laying directly under the crank. The valves are operated via pushrods. The block is however made of a magnesium alloy which means, along with the absence of a water jacket, the engine is pretty light. All boxer engines lend themselves to being fitted into a beetle because of the physical shape. There are alot of VW conversions with Alfa engines aswell as other VW boxer engines from vans etc. The Subaru engine is however the most interesting at the moment due to the enormous power potential and price (the 555 engines are becoming available). Don't get me wrong there are very quick bugs out there running turboed VW boxer engines but the cost is enormous!
