Default Rev limiter at 5k?

Hi,
Once during a downshift from 4th to 3rd in order to overtake, the car accelerated fine and then sounded as if it hit the limiter. The revs were between 4.5/5.5k iirc (my dad was driving) After that it continued to accelerate fine (still in 3rd gear).
I have tried several times to reproduce the problem but it hasn't happened again.
Any ideas why this might have happened?
The car is a 07 WRX.
I will try to take it to the dealer to see whether any error code has come up but the french b!@$tards are not very friendly as the car is imported from Germany!
I am hoping if I buy the psi3 ECU monitor it will show up any error codes?

Cheers,
