Installing a quickshift kit

Installing a quickshift kit
Who has done this themselves on a newage? I am tempted, but am worried about the DIY installation. Couldn't find any decent hits in the search that explained how it is done - I don't even know how to get the gaitor out!! Any guides out there on doing this?
While we're at it - it's for a MY05 WRX - anyone got opinions on the 'worthwhile-ness' of this?
Also - those of you who have done it - does more money spent=much better product OR has anyone got good experiences of the £20 eBay ones?
Cheers.

Easy now,
I got QS on my STI and had it already when I bought the Car. I wanted to test the difference to I sat in a MY06 SpecD and couldn't tell the differnce. Once I sat back in mine I could tell the difference but only a little bit. Must effect the throw by a couple of ml but I never measured it. Nice to have but couldn't the difference mate.

Cheers Alex - I thought the STi shift would be better than the WRX, so figured the improvement on a WRX would be more noticable. Isn't the 06 SpecD the STi box (ie. same/similar to yours)? I think the gains for an STi may be less noticable as you say.
I am more interested in the installation process - how it's done, was it easy, etc? I am sure I will like the shorter throw even if it is only slight.

The £20 ebay job made quite a difference to my bugeye WRX . It was reasonabily easy to fit , took me about an hour . If you have circlip pliers it should only take quarter that . I spent atleast 10 mins trying to get the circlip off then 30mins to get it back on with large scissors !!!!!!

Craigie - when you say easy to fit, can you give me a brief overview of each step? Like how to remove the gaitor, which tools are needed to undo any bolts, etc. I am sure I would work it out but rather have an idea before I embark on butchering my motor

Watch this video it is in two parts and for the STi . For the 5 speed box there is no reverse lock cable or spring for the reverse lever . The only other difference is that the "C clip" that is inside the car in 6 speed box is underneath the car .

I brought one of these £20 kits off Ebay for a newage and it was dead easy to fit !!
I fitted it (as advised by another scooby netter) to grease up the ball on the end of the quick shift and use a mallet to knock it back into the plastic socket in the gear linkage, took about 10 minutes to fit.
One thing I did find that was a bit crap in the kit was the lack of washers for bolting it back up to the linkage, there was loads of sideways play in the gear stick, I chuckked the bits from the kit and used rubber washers off the water feed pipes for washing machines, hey presto no wobble in the gear stick, was impressed with the kit for £20

The thread on the shifter is too small for my Nardi (OEM) **** though.
Any ideas as to what I can do to get it to stop slopping around?

You used to be able to get a plastic sleve/spacer that threaded onto stick and the **** then glued onto it iirc.
How much smaller is the stick..? If its not much different you could try some plummers PTTF tape.
Failing that Araldite it..!

Don't want to glue it, as I won't be able to remove it then
