Been looking at these myself was looking at the st-3 but apparently the st-2 has better gadgets (st-3 has leather)
Power wise i would be going backwards as my 53 plate sti type uk has 340/320 but im fed up of the running costs and i get itchy feet after 1 year in a car anyway lol (2 years in ths one) which is very good for me!
Also looking at the astra vxr which is about on a par with these but the poxhall badge puts me off although looks a VERY nice car

So the Vauxhall badge would put you off a VXR but the Ford badge wouldn't put you off buying an ST?!

I personally would go for the ST-2 given the choice of those two cars.

the st is a great car my older brother has 1 with the recaro back bench so i beleive its the 3 and wow does it go.. hes had intercooler fitted de cat and re map and its a savage peice of kit. i would put money on it beating a standard wrx hands down. he bought 1 in the dark blue as the orange is so old hat now it seems every1 and there dog opted for that colour. its got a volvo 5 pot under the bonnet and is really very nice. it was that or the rs but the rs was getting on a bit so went for the st. good choice if you ask me.

I have MY06 WRX with PPP and my mate has a ST2. Statistically, mine is quicker, but realistically, there isn't a lot in it. Yes, mine does pull away a little bit to his, but it isn't that noticable. The 4WD does help round the bends as the ESP in the ST does cut in for the slighest bump! He does turn it off everytime he gets in. My advice is to get a newer scooby rather than the older one (if you are prepared to spend that sort of money on the ST). You are able to chuck it round the corners better!!

I haven't raced an ST yet and I know there is a power difference but I raced a Focus RS recently, down some streches of dual carridge way and through some big roundabouts.

I thought it would keep up quite well with me but I f**king destroyed it. Slowed down in the end and let him catch up, he then raced off in a different direction.

I have got a '94 WRX with 3" de-cat from downpipe back and a filter, oh and Tien coilovers with soild top mounts

Why would you spend 17K on a ford and only 6K on a scoob? You could get away with spending around 13K now and picking yourself up a nice newage. IMO you'd be getting more for your money with a scoob.

I have a MY00 classic, but if i had the £££££ I'd have a newage or *cough* an evo 8...

Don't think that'd be in any doubt. With those mods, probably around 280bhp; compare to a similarly modded WRX (which would also give around 280bhp) and there'd be little in it. However, I wouldn't expect a standard WRX to slaughter a standard ST in a dry straight line drag either - again similarly powered, weight etc = very similar performance.

By most accounts, the Astra VXR will have significantly better fuel consumption than the ST (EVO were getting about 5mpg better), so if running costs are important, I'd consider that. Personally I don't see there's a lot of image difference between a Ford ST and a VXR Vauxhall.

Scooby all the way mate. That 4WD really does make a huge difference. You can get deals on scoobies too. My brand new one should have been £21,500.00 and I paid £16,500.00. As Nike say, "Just Do It!"

If you spend £17 k on any of these cars depreciation's gonna hit you.

Not fancy a Newage Sti for about £11,000 ?

A standard WRX will not 'eat/destroy' a standard Focus ST.

I really don't understand where these pre-conceived ideas come from?!? From looking at the Top Gear lap times, the Focus ST had a very similar time to the Impreza STI, let alone a WRX!

You guys live in fantasy land if you think a standard WRX will destroy the new generation of hot hatches.

A Standard WRX would not destroy it but would beat it, its only a "hot hatch"
