manual boost control
hi just wondering if anyone can tell me if its safe to use a manual boost control, and how much can the boost be increased too, without any long term damage to engine etc??got a 93 wrx, full decat, panel filter,z4 ecu

In my own experience (including a Dyno run) the answer is yes, no det and sensible Lambda's having increased boost to just under the 0.8 fuel cut. Although an import will be closer to the 'edge' as its a higher CR engine.

Hi, I have been running a Dawes device for 18 months now, and apart from a little boost creep due to weather ie hot/cold its been fine, cars past mot and had no problems, I used it as a short term fix as my boost selonoid failed and didnt want to pay subaru over £140 for a new one when for a few quid extra I could get a HKS boost controller.
I do however not reccomend the use of a BLEED VALVE had some bad experiences back in my RS ownership days.

I can't remember who, but someone one here says that he has a 93 with a Z4 and runs a MBC 1.2bar and got 320bhp on the rolling road. I would not like to recommend this though unless it was set and checked properly by someone in the know.. Be prepared for MPG to plummet drasticaly.

got it up and running, havnt played about with it too much but its boosting at around 0.9bar, is that about right, or can i probably boost around 1bar without any future probs?apreciate all ur advice and help guys!!!cheers

depending on where your fuel cut kicks in it should be safe, I would however again not recommend going much higher, you run the very likely risk of pinking. I would recomend the use of an AFR gauge if your taking it up to limits.

You could try 1.0bar and see if you get fuel cut. I've safely run that on a '95 WRX, although it did it before I put the Dawes device on. Bear in mind your boost gauge may not be 100% accurate. You should get yourself a detalarm or knocklink too.

Boost gauges are different, but I could set my Dawes to 1.05 bar with the Z4 ECU, no problems but I was running SUL + octane booster (1ml / litre NF) full decat and panel filter

Yeah, it's one of those things that may be fine on one car but not on the next..... I ran my 95WRX at 1.0bar for about a year before changing the ECU withough any probs.
Having said that, the difference between the dawes device and my ESL chip is huge, both in power and driveability. I'd definately recommend one as an update for the Z4.
