hi,
I have just joined your forum, looks great.
I have sold my car...series 1 rst....and want to buy a subaru wrx.
I cant aford more than £5k.
Just wondered if anyone could give me tips on what to look for when buying one..ie: rust ect.
is the Wrx a good 1st subaru to buy or should i look at a different model??
i am 32, 5yr no claims, so that should help with insurance.
cheers

Hi there,
Do a search on here for "buying advice" you will get loads of threads asking about what to look for, very common subject. - there is tons of advice to get from that search.
Do put some cash aside though - they can be costly to run & maintain properly.
I love Dorset.

If budget is a high priority, which it sounds like given your relatively low buying price and concern for insurance, basically don't buy an Impreza. They are an expensive car to run and maintain.
Not trying to put you off, as they are great cars but don't max yourself out buying and insuring as they are thirsty and older cars tend to need a bit more loving care when it comes to parts in my experience.

They are guzzlers so you could be looking at doubling you fuel bills (mine did). General Oil/Filter services aren't to bad, but needs to be done every 6 months.
If you're looking at spending 5.5K it'll be at the sort of age when things can start to go wrong with it... Parts are very expensive (i.e. i see you had a ford, a lambda sensor for my ford was £15 - for a genuine subaru lambda it cost me £130ish)

If 5 Grand is all you have then you need to get some insurance quotes and then think about what you have left to spend. UK turbo's in goodish nick turn up at about the 3 grand mark, but high miles. Think about next services as well, there are some at 60,000 and 90,000 mile that cost a fortune from the dealers. Got my UK car with Full History over 3 Year ago for just under 8 Grand, worth tops 4.5 now. And I had to spend out on it too, 500 quid for a fitted clutch, 350 quid on tyres, 320 quid on a cam belt kit fitted, arms and legs on insurance (NON Standard car) and don't even mention fuel bills...........but you only live once so what the hell.......... :-) . PS Had to fit plugs and Coil packs (4 coils, one for each plug, 60 quid each!!).

I was quite lucky in that i came from a 220hp peugeot 309 so in effect a subaru is a damn sight cheaper for me to run even the fuel
As for buying one i paid £3350 for my 93jdm wrx with 70k miles and tein coilovers all round and she's been a lovely car to drive
So don't let the others put you off if you feel you can afford it believe me it's worth it

The only thing I'd suggest is definately get insurance quotes first - especially if you want a modified model as you posted a link to - it costs SIGNIFICANTLY more to insure a modified car in my experience.

This is what ive just sold. Quite gutted, but need to move on.
The car in the link i posted i have been quoted £58 a month.
How good are Wrx on a long journey for guzzling?
Also i know on the RST engine noises are paramount for trouble.
Do subaru have any noises that indicate to walk from a sale?? rattles ect?
