Mass Air-Flow meter (MAF) ![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
It measure volume of air at a set sampling rate which = mass which = airflow, i.e the same![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
However there are three types: Spring loaded Flap sensor, Hot wire sensor and Hot film sensor. Subarus are Hot film sensors.

My edit should help clarify, as the old Bosch (L- jetronic onwards) one were flappers ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Uuless we're talking about K-jetronic (mechaincal injection) where the flap controls valves and stuff.

Thats them,
I'm very familiar with the L-tronic J-tronic and kinda know the K-tronic.
Seen the Classic style air flow but didn't realise how it worked.
What is fitted to the newage, the same?

My mate 93' WRX has a 'wire' in a plastic tube type thing. Similar looking thing to an J-tronic flow meter but alot less bulky.
He says you have to be carefull if you oil the filter as too much can damage them??

He's right, the wire works by being heated and airflow over it cools it. Which affects its resistance. (Film ones work in the same way).
If its coated with oil, dust or crap. It insulates it so airflow doesn't cool it as much. Typically it ends up with the car running lean. And on a older Impreza, which runs open loop at high boost, it eventually leads to killing the engine (melted pistons, overloaded bearings etc). All down to a dodgy sensor and/or bad choice of filter.
They can be cleaned with brake cleaner or carburettor cleaner, but I've seen mixed outcomes from doing this. Hot wire ones seem ok with being cleaned this way, at least.
