Default golf gti v sti

Hi all,

I was just wondering, if my 05 sti PPP is really 305 ps as the other day I had a little play with a new shaped gti, and to my surprise he could keep up with me. What surprised me even more that even in the twisties it was right behind me. Now I know the STI is not the fastest thing on earth, and I also didn't give in 100% in the twisties(girlfriend was in the car too...), but I did give in quite a lot, enough that normally cars can''t follow, hence my surprise.
In the straight I give in all and he just stayed with me. Now how can this be ? I know 4wd and loss, but comon 300 bhp can't go down that much that a 200 bhpísh car to keep up with me. I had some luggage and we were 2 in the car, but I still think it is a bit strange. So the only thing I can think of is that my car is not actually 300 bhp, cause then with the extra weight and 4wd power loss it would explain...

Anybody else had a run against one of these ? I'm just curious that is all, and wonder if my car is 100% ok...

Got to have been tweaked.

Was on the Motorway couple of weeks ago in the outside lane waiting for the car in front to move over.

Up comes Black GTI in my boot etc, you know what I mean.

Booted it & surpised him, made my point then moved over.

I only have 282 Brake so, in theory you should have eaten him with a 300 Brake STI.

Regards

I went up against a red GTI on Saturday as it happens. We couldn't really open it up too much due to traffic, but when we did I had no problem with him at all tbh...

Later that day came across a blue VXR and that was a different story. Again traffic prevented us doing too much but he stayed with me even though his tyres were squealing and the car obviously on the limit.

Down to drivers, circumstances on the road at the time and obviously what they are running.

Maci,

Have you noticed that tons of Golfs are all black.

See the odd red GTI or an occasional white one.

And they think Scoobs are common!!!

Hi Mate,

This should help. A friend of mine just got a Brand new Golf GTI with a Flappy paddle Gear Box. Now he wanted to try it out on my STIppp. Just a simple Straight allowing me to get up to about 100mph. Now I did leave him off the start but I always struggle with the quick gear changes which didn't leave that much gap. He was well Chuffed. Next Time round he wasn't so lucky as I had got used to my Gear box! Getting to my point, the Golf's mid range is superb in my opinion. I suppose the Golf's have been round for 30 years, so they would expect to get something right.

Ps Also had a go with a older gold through the bends and he could sort of keep up and I was running 340bhp. I did say sort of.

well that means that either my car is not going as it should, which I doubt as it feels great, or he had his golf tweaked as suggested before

yes, this explains a lot. I had rolling start, both times with him, and on the straight I really booted it, and he could keep up.

try it in the wet, that sorts the girly FWD hatches from the real cars

Iv have had GTIs try and gee me along shall we say, my sti is runnin near 340bhp with a tsl map and other bits, they dont give me any problems, rather embarrasing for them actually. My car was an sti with ppp when i first got it, and I didnt have any trouble with gtis then either, I wonder if the golf in question has been tweaked tbh.

You gotta get the changes right otherwise you are look a bit slow. You can't exactly pull up at the lights after and say
"I couldn't get it in Gear"
My Friend used to do Formula 4 so I always like to hear his opinion on driving ect, and he said "Those Golf's are quick!" I could tell you the time when I had a GO with and R32 but I left my Flame suit at home. Now that was a Race throught the streets. On the bends on the bends I left him and in the straights it was even. I'll never do that again as it scared the life out of me. How I didn't get Nicked I don't?

Both the TFSI and the older 1.8T have a lot of useable torque from low revs and pretty flat torque curves.

I had a little jaunt with a STI and he didn't go anywhere. Lots of noise though so i guess he was trying.

It's all in the driving.

I reckon a remapped ED30 would give an STI PPP a good hiding.

You don't have a red GTI per chance as it may be you I left standing at the weekend?

Nice looking car mind you...

Hardly a surprise that a car that most likely has similar BHP as an Impreza, weighs roughly similar but has less drivetrain losses is about as fast surely?

Just thank your favourite deity it wasn't one of the edition 30 cars that map to over 300bhp or you'd most likely have been well beaten.

i had a drive in a new demo gti a few weeks back and to be honest its a great car, very good infact but nowhere near as fast as any of the scoobs i've owned.i have since been doing my homework on them and they do respond well to tunning plus they do have a super chassis so i guess your gti was tuned.
just on a side note i've had a run in with a focus st and it could go some, nothing in it in a straight line 70+ till silly speeds"on the track",i know it must have been tuned but it does remind us thats its not only scoobs that can be tuned to big bhp

I had a DSG GTI it was quite quick and with perfect gearchanges each time using the paddles you could make very good progress, However it is not nearly as quick as my STI PPP, if it was mapped then it would possibly keep up..... maybe,

A lot of the BWA engined GTI's are rumoured to be @ 220bhp so add the DSG which IMO is worth another 20 bhp look at the difference between a manual and DSG golf here

YouTube - DSG vs 6spd manual

As another point the power delivery is very linear and turbo spins at 1700rpm from what i remember
