Default Water Temp

hi guys,

this is going to seem a very stuipid questions but how long does it take for your coolant to get to temp?

the water temp in my subaru gets to temp within the mile or so. and untill the oil is to temp (got an oil temp gauge) the engine speed is kept below 3K.

this seems quick to me. once there it doesn't move

my previous car would take 3 or 4 miles if not more to get the coolant up to temp (driven the same way i.e. not above 3K until everything had warned up)

is this normal?

coolant doesn't take very long at all, couple of minutes max so perfectly normal, oil takes much much longer

Its safe almost straight away as long as the oil has got round and the AFR's are correct.....however some seem to run far to rich cold on boost and thats bad news! Its only the Piston/bores that have to be to temperature and that will only take 10 seconds or so, however there is certainly no harm (and it doesn't take long) waiting until its at least at 60C

So waiting till 80 degrees is good enough.
I asked the chap i bought it off what was the best tempreture to wait till and he said he usually waits till 80 b4 hitting boost.

The gauge im guessing, is for the water, not the oil...? (it dosnt state on the gauge if its water or oil you see)

Yes the gauge on the instrument cluster is the water temp.

you will need a second guage to measure the oil temp.

i have got three dephi guages in my STi in place of the digital clock on the center console. Guages monitor

Oil Pressure
Oil Temp
Boost Pressure

Yup,
80deg oil temp is fine for short bursts of boost.

Its exactly what I wait until for. I do not go really heavy until 90deg.
