welcome. id say if after a uk model, probably a half decent 97-99 car with average miles would be round £4k.

got my 99 uk turbo for £3900 but with 120k miles on it last december. engine however had 50k miles so budgeted for wear and tear items, knowing the engine should have lots of miles left.

The number 1 piece of advice is VITAL:-

Do NOT, ever, ever, buy a 'cheap' Impreza Turbo!!!

Other than that it's the usual solid gold advice:-

UK car - no need to go the Import route

1 Owner, or as few as you can get

Full Subaru Service History for 5 years at least and independent after that

Avoid all modified cars, no need to take on another mans tat (make your own!! )

Get an Inspection done!!!!!!

Good luck, if you buy with the above in mind you stand a chance of getting your bum into one of the great cars of recent times!

If that was me i would firstly ring my local Subaru garage or even call in which is better and ask them to keep an eye out for a classic which is being used as a part ex against a newer Subaru, more often than not if someone is part exing an impreza at a main dealers for a newer impreza then it will have been well looked after regardless of the milage.

Obviously do the usual as well and keep your eye out on piston heads and in the auto trader and take someone along that knows about impreza`s as its easy to cover up problems on an older car like with grease and paint etc.

Just be patient is my main advice, never be tempted to buy the first thing you see so that you can get out on the road and enjoy a subaru as you may regret it further down the line. Don`t restrict yourself to travelling a certain amount to view a car, i would go nationwide for the right car.

high fives

ignore the "avoiding the import route" dribble lewis spouts. youll find, as with many of his posts, theyre full of ****e.

but as much history as possible helps. some times higher mileage cars that have been well serviced will run better than lower mileage cars that may have been track dayed, poorly serviced/maintained.

obviously as lewis says, as fewer previous owners as possible too.

oh and if buying privatley, defo worth taking a mechanic mate along for a full inspection. if the seller is arsey about this... you know they have something to hide...

Thought you only had a budget of 4k thats nearly 6k, for that you can get a much newer car and know where its been
If your up in the rochdale area (where that car is) then id suggest looking though the auto trader

Your walking into a mine field here really
Doubt he will knock off over 17% off the value, doubt he will knock off more than a couple of hundred really, plus you have the mine field of an imported car, chances of history with it are minimal, and its very important to have history.
The car WILL need a HPI and/or vehicle check (depending on what you buy, note that the HPI wont tell you any history of a fresh import so it could be a write off and you wouldnt know it).
Insurance is the other problem, the STi's will cost you considerably more than a UK turbo, plus the ammount of dogs out there (esp imports) is quite amazing....
Realistically, you have set yourself a 4k limit, stick to it, find a nice lowish mileage (for age), full service history example and start there, forget about the imports, too many not so good ones and the last thing you want is to spend 5k on a car then pay another 3k for an engine rebuild
