Question

OK, guess it should be in 'lighting' but it is a general question, re legalicty, Moddys feel free to move it if you wish.

Anyway onto the plot.

As those who have seen the car may know, it has some mini blue neon light lights just above the center air vents. In my defence, these were on the car when I got it and they do look funky. They are now available in halfords I believe.

Here's the question, what's the legal standing with having these things turned on, mainly at night? The reason I ask is that they give out a blue light, thus some people may think there is a police car behind them, also plod might not be too happy about it either.

to be honest, I've only ever had them on when I'm stationary, and I'm guessing that's ok? or maybe not.

so, what's the law regarding this type of thing?

My brother, being a bit tasty with electronics has said that he could knock up a rather nice flasher circuit for the lights, no idea why one would want to do that though

Cool

As I understand it you are only allowed white lights on the front of a vehicle.. and red on the back and then the orange indicators... everything else is illegal..

I think they are relaxed about christmas lights as long as they are not over the top and also the blue / green tinged headlight bulbs seem to be okay too...

Being Blue I think they'd might try and say you were impersonating a Police car.. not having seen them I dunno how visibly they are...

Sounds rather funky though... picture??

JGM - not got piccy of them on but can show you where they are;

look at center air vents, either side you can see small silver things, these are the lights. give out neon like blue light.

might one day get round to doing night-time pic of them.

"No light other than a white light should be visible from the front of the vehicle" Same for the rear , only red. they do not like any coloured interior lights at all. I had a blue one inside the car, not a neon, only a small blue bulb that cast a blue (not bright) light on the roof.

Got pulled for something else , but they mentioned the interior light.

Wink

They don't look very big, depends how much light they immit I'd guess...

I'd keep them for posing only and watch for the rozzers...

probably only be a warning...

As said, only put them on when stationery, and only usually at meets.

I got some of these about 9 months ago, £9.99 from Halfords I think, the box does state "FOR SHOW USE ONLY" think that says it all really, although as long as your not pointing them out of the front windows can there really be an issue ?

mmm...a few years back there was an IAM motorcycle guy, who's name escapes me, who put a blue flashing light on his helmet. Apparently this was legal, cause it wasnt on the vehicle itself...

very very amusing...

OK, what about BMW, whose front lights seem to have a blue tinge at a certain angle, I think Fiat also have this??

OK, they're not painted blue, but it caught me out once.

Or is it just my eyes

I bought some for mapreading installed in the same place as markus, little did i know they emit neon blue light. I expected a crisp white light they are rucking useless, one is brighter than the other and i cant find my receipt.

Seem to remember that it said somewhere on the packaging that they must not be visible from the outside of the car.

the halfords ones are interesting as the silver bodied ones have white light and blue bodied ones have blue light, but mine are silver with blue lights.

max power boy I know, but I like them.

best mod has to be blue light up pedals, now they are cool! wonder who has a set of them?

The displaying of blue lights on a M/V other than a police/ambulance/fire service vehicle is an offence and WILL lead to prosecution. Its bad enough people doing stupid things in front of emergency vehicles to get out of the way (mount kerbs at speed, stop dead in the middle of the carriageway, etc) without them repeating the trick for people with no imagination, or seemingly taste
