Default knocking from the engine

i havent had the car long and i aint really clued up on scoobys

but over the last week there has been a knocking coming from the right side of the engine. i phoned up a subaru place to ask them and find out prices and they said its either shims or hydralic lifters but then said to do it they have to take the engine out as i said i aint clued up but that seems a bit extreme to me.

can anyone shine a light on it please.......

oh btw the car is a 280 bhp version 3 sti sportswagon jap import on a P reg
if that makes it any better

thanks
Foyie

An STI wont have hydraulic lifters. Id suggest a more knowledgable garage.

ive got the same problem currently fella.

noisey tappets (hydraulic lifters). can be annoying, but from what ive heard of specialists, you can either ignore the noise and eventually have the problem sorted, or you can have the engine dropped out and the lifters replaced.

but for the sake of this, you may as well get the bottom end rebuilt.

me personally am going to wait until something does go for the sake of replacing the lifters now along with other parts that are fine.

jase @ scoobybits told me most the above.

Could even be piston slap. If i remember the number 4 piston is quite prone to it

dunno about your circumstances, but as said above when jase and i discussed my noisy tappets, he said you may as well change things like the piston rings etc too, which in a sence constitutes to a bottom end rebuild after everything that gets replaced. he mentioned over a grand costs wise. for the sake of the time and hassle to drop out the engine and strip it down to where it needs to be, it just wouldnt be worth replacing the tappets only, and he wouldnt do it. this was why i came to my decision of turning my stereo up and buying a louder exhaust
