You could cheater some years back, by getting a car at 16 and insurancing it at 16 but dont do anything with it, then by the time you have passed your test and got yourself a car you would have 1yr no claims all ready. cant now, i dont think

I would say 20's without a doubt. But at the end of the day, your premium is heavily based on where you live...

Pretty sure most Impreza's are group 20, and a killer for insurance until you get to 25. UK cars can be insured for a lower premium, and there's always the Impreza Sport, if you want a low cost solution.
When I was late teens, I went for the Audi Coupe Quattro (the non-turbo one), and did as much as I could to the NA engine (ported heads, cams, exhaust, intake, etc.) and got over 160bhp out of a car, which as standard had 136bhp. Decent performance, great grip AND reasonable insurance..... Happy days....

speaking from experience...

got insured on on a wrx at 21. £2250 fully comp (this is with 2 months YES 2 months driving experience) all legit etc... group 20

got insured on current scoob (uk my99 turbo) aged 22 for £1751 fully comp. via ecar, as they insure upto group 17 for yound drivers over 21, so i fitted the bill nicely.

shop around, but theres younger guys then me driving them about. i have no ncb bonus either.

why dont you go for a non turbo to start with a classic sport or new age GX model.
My mate has a Bug eye GX and it's still quick and looks the same as a wrx apart from the scoop, which you can buy if you really wanted it.

Going to risk sounding like a boring old fart here (am I really 30 today... please make it not happen, where did the years go) but just do a few years rattling round in a Saxo or something first and build up a bit of experience. Please. I reckon if I had an Impreza at 17 I'd be dead now for sure. But then I was a bit of a dick at that age - people are different.

I bought my UK Turbo 2000 when I was 20 and the cheapest insurance I could find wanted about £2200 fully comp, so I waited 3 months til I was 21, and got it from ecar - £1158 Fully comp, and thats with 2 years NCB.

My son is 19 with 2 years ncb, but drove a sport for the first 2 years of his insurance, so looked very good in the eyes of the insurer and is now fully comp 2.4k a year

Better off hammering around in a hot hatch. The non turbo scoobs are dog slow - even bog standard wrx's don't feel that quick in the real world.

Totally agree mate, you weren't the only dick at that age no fear, not streetwise, and total lack of experience, i too would be dead i reckon past the limit in a scoob will bite ya **** and is lots more harder to control than 2wd if your intent on getting a scoob then invest in some track time or track experience like the prodrive day
