Default Advice required - Need a 'work run' motor.....

I am looking for a bit of advice......

I need a cheap 'banger' to drive me to work and back as I don't trust most areas in which I'd leave my new motor.

I wouldn't really be looking to spend more than £300 and I'd want the 'beast' to be a diesel.

I am ideally looking for a car that will cost nothing to run, will be as reliable as you like and will go for 1000s upon 1000s of miles.

All suggestions are welcomed, any advice and info is appreciated as always.

Cheers

G

We've got a Citroen ZX Volcane TD for my other half to go to work and back, paid £300 with 110k, now 130k and no problems [touches wood]

Really comfy and economical, £40 gets you 420 miles.

Avoid citroen AX/saxo and pug 106. I bought one as a run about at that sort of price and the rear torsion beam bushes are weak. The only fix is a either a new rear beam or new bushes which is very labour intensive as the trosion bars are known to seize.

When mine went the AX was limited to 45mph otherwise it would shake itself to death

I sold an old Pug 205 1.4 diesel about a year ago now for £150, looked rough as owt but drove fine. The chap who bought it rang me back the other day and said he'd been running it on vegetable oil or something for most of the year and it had cost him virtually nothing.....wish I'd kept it myself now!

Thanks for the replies.

Going to have a good look about, last thing I want is a heap of crap even though I am only paying £300.

another vote for the Citroen ZX, although I'd be looking for a 1.9D auto
non-turbo. I'm on my third Last one died at 170,000 miles because I was lazy and skipped the cambelt change at 140,000ish. You'll struggle to find anything worth buying for 300 quid. 900 just bought my latest 1.9D auto estate with 89k, full service history and a/c

The Pug 405 Diesels were good runners. Also try hunting for an Passat or Golf. Had an M reg Golf with 190k on the clock when the Turbo finally blew.
The 1.9td engine in the VW's is basically the same across the whole line.

Perhaps I'm being a bit naive here, but why would anyone sell a car that's perfectly reliable and not a piece of crap, for just £300? Compared to the costs of tax, MOT, insurance, parts and fuel, you're practically asking for a free car!

Hows about a Rover 218 td..... it uses the ultra reliable Peugeot engine, a slightly less reliable rover gearbox, and what is pretty much a Honda bodyshell... i've had two, and am now driving a 418 tourer...... ie, estate..... all it really gets is oil changes......

I saw a 1993 Peugeot 405 diesel go through Blackbush auctions a while ago for £20! WITH a full year's MOT! And it ran! Sounded tappetty and awful, ripped interior and everything, but it goes!

That's cheaper than a cab to the airport! We live in the age of throwaway cars.

I had a 205 diesel that I bought for £400. I travelled to/from Devon/Manchester most weekends and 18k miles later I sold it for £400
All that I replaced was a front caliper £20 from a scrappy.
