Default Wanabie - Scooby owner

Hi all I have been roaming aroud these forums for a while now and I have to say some of your cars are gorgeous.

At the moment I own a 306 TD, I brought this on finance in Sept 2005 over 3 years, so the finance is paid of next September.

I have always loved scoobies but they seem to be getting very popular nowadays so I was thinking should I have a scoobie for my next car or a Evo ?

The problem I think I will have is the insurance I am 26 years old held my liscence since I was 18 but I have zero no claims bonus and 3 claims in the last 3 years.

If I went for a scoobie which one would you guys recomemend, I would be willing to spend around the 5k - 7k I think I will need to buy from a dealer again because this will be on finance unless I can get a reasonable loan.

With having 0 no claims you would be best getting a standard uk spec turbo and getting as many insurance quotes as you can. I am 26 and got a wrx import and had insurance quotes as high a £5500! but after many hours on the net got it down to £700 fully comp. Good luck with the search. After having owned an evo before my scooby i would go for a scooby every time!

I still have my first Scooby which is a UK spec Turbo 2000 year 2000 model. Great car, near enough standard and awesome fun to drive. Insurance is £600 fully comp but I'm 36 with full no claims.

That sounds good, what insurance company was that and do you have any no claims.

And why would you choose the scoobie over the evo ?

I am with Norwich Union, only had 1 year no claims at the time.
Even though the evo is a good car it needs a bit more TLC than the scooby and needs a service more regular.

Even though the evo is a great car, i personally think you get more for your money with a scoob, i must admit i had a hard time choosing. If insurance is an issue the uk turbo would be the best option in my eyes. The evo and STI's would sting you in the insurncer stakes, however if you can afford it get a STI, you wont regret it!!

A STi or WRX would be nice, whats the main differences between the three, Turbo, STi & WRX

il pop my two pence in here...

22 less than two years driving under my belt and im insured via ecar for £1751 fully comp on my uk turbo.

basically between 93-2000 all wrx and sti variants were japanese. insurance companies love imports (not) and thus usually charge more than their uk counterparts.

however... 93-98 uk turbos were 208bhp
98-00 uk turbos were 215bhp (like mine)

and the various giuses of wrx and sti models between 93-00 (all imports remember) were from 240-280bhp standard.

uk classic impreza is group 17 insurance, classic wrx/sti imports were all group 20 insurance.

hope this helps fella. welcome to the site.

Yeah cheers mate so how quick is your car ?

Also what do these drive like at high speeds on the motorway, and as any members had there scooby converted to LPG how much performance would you loose and how much MPG would you gain in converting to LPG ?

P.S. just done a on-line insurance quote with my current insurer's Elephant based on your car it is £2990.75 fully comp with £350 excess

i still had a years finance on my car and traded it in part ex at a dealers for my wrx they will pay the remaining finance off and take the car as part ex so that isn't a problem.
Insurance - check out the insurance section on the forum and try somewhere like A PLAN i just saved £330 on my quote with them over elephant.

I didn't think a garage would take my car because I owe more on the car than its worth ?

dunno about lpg, v-power is my drug.

scoob do not light constant high speed runs, ie 130+ on a motorway.

i easily cruise at around 80-90 with no problems on a commute.

quickness? it will hit 60 in just under 6 secs, wrx quicker, sti quicker still, but youll be lucky to get any sort of reasonable quote for an import so young.

buy a uk classic, stick a decat exhaust on, panel air filter, and a remap, 270bhp is easily attainable. 235ish without remap, probebly wht im running now with decat and k&n filter

im off to bed before work, im foofed

is your scoobie what you class as a uk classic ? I was talking about 80 - 100 on the motorway not 130+ , the main thing that puts me of with the scoobie are the running costs.

Good advice, I'll second that. I do a fair motorway commute around those speeds, 80-90, and probably only get 20-22mpg with V-power, so economical they aint. But running costs in terms of spares - brake pads, discs and the like, aren't really any higher than your 306 - these aren't complex or 'precious' cars, despite what some on here would have you believe. They're also reliable if you look after them - more regular servicing than you're used to, but I won't bother going on about it - just do a search on here or read the Subaru Impreza FAQ

specialist insurers do a very good job mate. they can give tremendous quotes compared to the big guns who only generalise the brand subaru into "highly nickable road going rally car" lol

yes fella, my cars a uk classic, my99 t-plate. few simple mods and my insurance is well under 2k as said above. happy enough with the power compared to an sti/wrx variant, and the running costs arent that bad, but you always need a few quid spare incase something goes wrong.

again if you look after the car in general and dont buy a dog from the start, you will be rewarded with a "smiles per miles" that no other car can give you for the same money.

i never thought id be so obsessed with a car, considering i only got into them at 16/17, but this is my first child. id rather spend on her than myself, and have sacrificed many a night on the beer or clothing, to fund my modding phenominan with the scooby.

It looks like your sacrfices have paid of mate because your scoobie is well nice.

I have just done an online quote with Elephant again for a Scoobie Sport 1996 4WD, £806.75 3rd part fire & theft & £1105 fully comp with £350 excess. What is your guys opinions on the sport what sort of power can you get from the sport ? would love a turbo but from the couple of quotes I have had it looks like the sport maybe my only option for a year or two or a Golf Mk4 GT TDI ?

sports are good cars, but only come with around 125-130bhp.

i had one for when i passed my driving test last year. handles well, plenty of grip, but always been over shadowed by its big brother.

try keith micheals, a-plan, greenlight. they are specialists, and frequent on here in the guises of...

moleywrx - keith micheals
tony@greenlight

not sure on a-plan.

try the insurance section fella.

sure there must be people worse off than you insurance wise, who get competitive quotes.

it took about 5yrs to convince myself to get a scooby, plus insurance was to high then lol, i was looking at getting a wrx but was put of and then ended up getting a ltd edition vectra supertouring 200, owned that for 4 yrs and put it up for sale twice as i thought i convinced myself into getting one, but never did, then sold the vectra and same again, and got a bmw 328i sport coupe, had that for 1yr then came across the one i had now,uk2000, mileage was 90k but car had fsh, sensibly modded and running good power, and very well looked after so went for that one. But have never looked back and think i should of made the move earlier, i did come across alot of wrx with dawes device and the comment i was getting where "stay well away" approach.
