Default Test drives when selling?

Looks like the fun is over- sensible commitments mean the scooby's got to go <view my scooby see if you're interested>

When i have people round to view it - what's the stand on insurance - if I let them take it for a spin am I right in thinking they only have 3rd party? Am I willing to take that risk?

Can i attempt to sell it without them actually driving it themselves? ie in the passenger seat!

If they have fully comp insurance for their car, they can drive other cars but are only covered for third party. I think that if they have third party themselves that they are not covered to drive others.
I personally would ask them to tke out insurance for the day to cover my car.
If they are serious about buying I'm sure they wouldn't mind.

No, I don't care what insurance they have. I'll take them out in the car and let them see what its like, but the first time someone else drives it is when they've bought it.

Always done it like that.

Cheers

Tricky one this.

1. I wouldn't like anyone taking my car out with only, at the best, 3rd Party Insurance.

2. When buying I would never buy a car without driving it first.

Catch22 ...... and why people part exchange cars at a garage - costs more, but takes away certain concerns.

You can obtain insurance, fully comp, for the vehicle you want to test. It is a pain though, some insurance companies try to tell you that you cannot do it.

In the end the guy who I was buying the car from, added me as a named driver to his policy so that I could test the car. We had negotiated on all items, including price, before we did this. He quite fairly would not let me test with only 3rd party, and I quite fairly would not buy without a drive.

This solution has the down side that if I did crash, the seller would have to pay the excess and recover from me. Also, it would affect his claims history. It was not an ideal solution, but my then insurance company were being a pain.

Not true.. Used to be the case years ago but isnt any more unless it explicitly states it on their certificate.

They can get a 1 day insurance policy, a few of them online these days.

The way I did it with mine was..

1st visit, I was taken out for a test drive, and decided I liked the car and would buy pending seeing how it drove.

2nd visit, arrived with cash and my new insurance policy, took it for a drive, and bought it.

With cars like Impreza's there are too many test pilots out there who just wanna rag peoples cars and dont have a clue. Once they are behind the wheel, your out of control.

Every comprehensive policy I've held for the last few years has included 3rd party cover for driving other cars - I agree it's worth checking, though.

3rd party is no good to the owner of the car if the test driver piles into a tree or another car. ONLY if they are NOT to blame.

If anyone wants to test drive my car, they come with their own fully comp.

tell them to get insurance from somewhere like Norwich union which will cover them for a day to test drive it for about £20 fully comp. If they are serious about it they will, dont let them drive it 3rd party if anything happens your up sh*t creek

...unless you have the full cash value of the car in your pocket as a deposit. Provided someone is serious about the car, and has checked it over (inc. paperwork etc) already, the test drive itself where they get to drive it is the last step anyway.

FYI, not everyone with fully comp insurance is insured 3rd party if you give them permission to drive your car. I believe this only happens when you're over 25 years of age. I myself am 24 and my insurance company have told me that I'm most definitely *not* insured to drive anyone else's car even with permission, although I will be once I hit 25.

Personally, with something as powerful as your car, I would let people test drive the car IF they looked sensible (older people perhaps), but anybody that looked to be under 30 wouldn't be going anywhere near the wheel.

Shame, very nice car you have there, like it has been mentioned get the potential buyer to take out a days insurance or no test drive.

How much are you looking at selling the car for?

Thats a good idea should sort the real buyers from the pilots...

The car will be in the for sale section if i can work out how to get permission?

I test drove all 6 impreza's with out insurance
because i was 23 at the time nobody could insure me for 1 day on an imported car.
As stated above, i would never buy a car with out test driving it myself.

And then because i couldnt insure it for a further 7 weeks i had to get my dad to drive it back third party on his insurance. i asked the guy who owned if he didnt mind not canceling the policy untill we got it home.

being that it's hard enough to sell a car nowadays, i would be more than happy to let someone drive my car 3rd party cover.

let's be honest, you're talking about a 16k+ car. you won't be getting chavs knocking on your door.

agree there's alot of tyrekickers out there but hopefully you'll spot any test pilots. you'll get a good idea when you take them out.

last scooby i sold was to a guy on here and he needed encouraging to put his foot down on the test drive! i'm sure you'll find a similar enthusiast trevor

heres another option take them out (you driving) show them what it can do etc, then go find a big empty car park and let them have ago, subaru's generally sell themselves when they get in and boot it, especially if its their first one, just my opinion mind

Same here, i just sold mine last week, to a sound lad from Nottingham, he drove it VERY sensibly, and i had to tell him twice give it some beans as he was being so careful
The moment he put his foot down he just laughed, and said 'i want it', and that was that, he gave me a deposit and picked it up later on in the week

I think you can read most people as to weather or not their wasting ur time and if there a muppet that just wants a rip in your scoob

Very very true, thats exactly how i fell for mine, and the lad that just bought it from me did exactly the same thing, think the noise has a big effect too

I'm selling my house at the moment, I let people look around but I don't let them live there first.

The whole point of test driving a USED vehicle is to find out how that particular car drives - whether it's taut and precise or sloppy, whether the brakes are firm or spongy, whether the clutch is smooth or if it judders and slips, that sort of thing. It varies a lot between cars depending on how the car has been treated in the past, and is the whole point of doing a test drive.

If you're driving a demonstrator with a view to buying new then you're fairly safe - but would you ever do it the other way round (ie. buy the demonstrator having only driven a brand new car)? I certainly wouldn't.

I agree and have done the same with all my (higher powered) cars.

Even if they have FC on their own car, it's TP on yours. One little accident/miscalculation and you're in trouble.

The guy who i bought my STi from took me out. After 10 mins he's was "Do you want a drive?"

I said: "No thank, i've seen the car, been out in it. That's fine. I'll drive it on the way home".
