On the whole, remarkably good - though it does depend on which model you get and how it's been treated. Running imports on the wrong fuel can knacker the engine, and there are a lot of cars out there which have been abused and not properly maintained. But find a straight one, look after it (which, be warned, will be expensive) and you shouldn't have any problems.

Don't get me wrong the WRX is a great car but it is a very different machine to the STi.

Expect about 22-24 mpg on Super Unleaded, service interval is every 10k miles. Let it warm up and cool down properly before and after a run, and make sure you get good advice before doing any mods. (Not sure how it is with the Seat, but you'll struggle to find any cars at all that haven't been modified in some way).

Very true, but bear in mind there is "modified" and "upgraded". Semantics I know but in the scooby world there is a big difference from some of the examples I have seen.

How much would you expect to pay for the above car??
and when you say warm up and cool down.. do you mean leave idle or just don't thrash out of the blocks.. wait till temps are up.. ??

As to price about £11-12k for a good example from a dealer.

Indeed - no need to necessarily leave the car to idle provided you've driven gently for the last couple of minutes before switching off.
It does take quite a while for the oil to warm up properly before it's a good idea to drive it hard though - about 3 to 4 times longer than it takes for the coolant to reach operating temp. (Yes, really, that long - get an oil temp gauge fitted if you don't believe me!)

my budget is pretty poor to be honest...

Well, if you can afford a 54 plate WRX, you can probably get, say, an '02 STI - though there weren't that many sold, and they have the round 'bugeye' headlights which you may or may not like. Or you can have your choice of any of the classic shape STIs, which are quite a different car.
Your best bet is to try and drive as many different versions as you can. I had a classic MY00 UK-spec car, which was great and I miss it. Then I had a MY05 STI, which I never really got on with that well - I sold it and bought a BMW 330D instead. Then, a few weeks ago, I bought a '96 STI, which I think I'm going to like as well - but only because it doesn't have to be my only car.

The WRX always gets some stick on here (intentionally or not) from the STI 'crew' but if you look on various websites you can find many reports saying it's a better car to drive on a daily basis than the STI, especially when the WRX has PPP.
Personally I love my WRX and wouldn't swap it for a STI because i'm not a fan of some of the design features. I'd rather have a WRX, lightly mod it and still save money over a standard STI.
As i'm sure many will say though, test drive whatever you can afford.

I was making the exact same decision as you a lil while back. I've allways allways loved the Leon (ever since seeing a bright yellow one ,when I was like 18, tearing up the alpe's in wet weather darting in and about all these coaches )
And I was convinced then that I would have to own one one day. But then the Impreza kinda popped into my head when I started looking for a Leon and TBH the impreza, i think now, is really in a different league.

I would say try and get a long test drive in a scooby.
Im very happy with my WRX tbh, perfect for to and from work, and a fun drive at the weekends.
Out of the 2, FWD lil pocket rocket that the leons are, they still have their downsides, like FWD lol.
Very different cars, could be something you totally hate when you drive tbh, so get out there in a WRX and an STi if you can.
I would say though, if your budget is only WRX, DONT drive the STi. As has been said, with PPP they are not slow cars, and the acceleration is pretty hot.
Good luck with your decision mate.

Well said flaps . I agree entirely. I am also more than happy with my uprated WRX which is faster than a std STi, but easier to live with everyday. I prefer the stealth look and the WRX gives me a fair few vital mpg to keep my commuting costs down to nearly bearable levels .

I don't think anyone has said anything derogatory about the WRX or it's performance. Also, as rightly stated when modified, either after market or by prodrive, it is a very quick car. However, the point is that the STI is designed to be set up as a better performance car and is quicker than the WRX. Many modded cars can be quicker than a standard STI, there is no sensible discussion to be had here.
Basically, it depends what you want from a car and how much you have to spend.

Nowt at all wrong with WRX. Had both WRX and STI (PPP) and have to say that in many ways I preferred the WRX. Better ride and handling. Not much slower at all...
