Does anyone else feel that their scooby isn't really that quick. I'm on my second scooby in 4 years, the first a '97 felt superb when I first bought it. A real kick in the back. My latest a MY2000 dosen't feel that quick. Sure, I know I'm used to the speed now but under hard acceleration I expect the gap between me and a typical 16V car to increase quicker.
My wife drives the car everyday. Last weekend she drove my mates Golf GTi (standard MY 2000) and came back saying "thats a nippy car".
Car's got a SS backbox. Thinking about a Power Engineering Phase 1 conversion. Anybody recommend this option or should I go for a full SS system? Any views appreciated regarding modding UK spec car.

I think you are better off with a down pipe and center section and then a link. The My00 are a bit off the pace due to the ECU change and I think the turbo is slightly different. I have changed mine and you are more than welcome to compare the difference.

MSP,
thru the gears you should slaughter a standard gti with no problems, in gear its going to be a little different as most cars now have a decent ammount of mid range grunt but even so you should still pull away, slowly but steadily and when your higher up the rev range you will leave pretty much every gti/ctr standing as thats where your going to excel with the better powerband
Mods wise... try a full decat system, if your car is a uk one then go for a ppp to retain the warranty or if its an import go for a link ecu, upgrade your brakes as the std ones are a little pathetic (ive a my00 with 4pot brembos and no way will i ever go back to the std 4 pots!) but expect to pay for your mods in both insurance and costs as they aint going to be that cheap
Tony(slightly modified MY00 owner, PPP and brakes for now )

Hmmm should add a little more i think
A couple of exhaust options for you,
scoobysport or scoobymania, even try the PE system!
As for turbos... i think that the pre 97's had a td05 turbo (same as the early wrx's) and now the later uk cars are fitted with a td04 turbo which is a smaller unit)
Hope that helps

I have a UK95, my mate had a UK00 (till he got his P1 ) and the feeling in each was completely different. My version Turbo which is bigger takes around 500 - 750 rpm longer to spool up but, gives a much bigger kick when it's spinning.
My mates UK00 was equally as fast but felt much smoother (less neck snapping!).
There must be a huge gulf now between my UK95 and the new shape UK01 if the comaprison with the UK00 was that it is now more refined.
I actually prefer the manicness of my version...you pays your money etc etc

Never felt that my standard MY00 was slow. No problem outrunning all kinds of cars be they hot hatches, Sierra Cosworths, S3s, you name it. Only had problems with top of the range Porsches, an F40 (you have to try! ) and one Sapphire Cosworth with an exhaust I could have parked in!
That said, the Scooby is not a drag racer, there are better cars for 0-60 and straight line speed tests. The best place to show what a Scooby can do is accelerating out of a corner or leaving a roundabout. Very few cars will ever keep up with a Scooby that's got its teeth into a corner.

I have a My99, de cat the middle and have an end can.
I also think the car is slow, and yep wish i could afford an evo but cant hence the scooby. As for cornering, the thing under steers like a dog, even with the prodrive geom set-up.
Took a ride in an evo 5 the other day, LOL try it, its like fair ground ride.
Had difficulty pulling away from a Mr2 at 120 (private road), more of a slow creep away from it.
I have yet to try one of the scoobs that is set up very nicely (any offers ??)
But as I read somewhere, you can stiffen the suspension, bigger breaks, up the engine and the scoob will be very respectable, but then surely your turning it into an evo?- well he said something along those lines (about a p1)
Scoobys are fantastic, for what we pay for them, I handed over 12k and got a 2 year old car that kicks most asses, and most of all, I love it and that’s what counts J

-- "At least we have a chance of standing out in a crowd though and not blending away to look like every other car on the road..."
It's funny you should say that.. because I walked out of a shop in Daventry, and a nice looking white Integra-R caught my eye.. and realised it was Harj's ('ring sticker on the back).. it was only then I noticed 3 scoobies parked either side of it. Anonymous or what..
Or if you want to go even faster, get a Skyline

I too have a MY00 and have a family friend in OZ who is a specialist scoob tuner. He came over to Greece for a holiday and to put some go faster bits on my car. We took it for a blast before we changed anything, fully stock that is, so that we could see what improvements would be made after fitting the bits and he said that my Scoob felt quicker as a stocker than any other stock scoob he had been in. Mine was a December 99 build, early MY00, so maybe it got the last of the MY99 ECUs.
Cheers,
Wrexy.

my m8,who has had loads of scooby's,summed it up at the weekend when telling me about his Xreg.he said it hesitates at low revs and is smoother higher up,but his older cars will pull all the way to 150,this 1 gets to 135 okay but anything over that needs a long road.it is standard but fitted a Dawes at the weekend to try, will report when I speak to him next.

Well talking of mods, I became the proud father of a Garat T4 turbo (and rat, that's quite a bit more pokey than the standard fitted onher large insurance increase) on the MY00, still keeps up with my mates cossie thought... He's got so much power if he boots it in third and changes up to 4th he gets wheel spin and rear end wobble....so much for fords !

should have added, that it took a full decat and k&n panel,to keep up with two standard S regs that he had,up the main straight at Knockhill, nothing in it.after the mods I could get past his standard T reg.

I presume the GTI was a turbo - if it had a re-chip and nothing else...it will have approx 195 bhp and between 200 and 240 lbs of torque (depending on which year) gives a big kick between 2500 -4000 rpm - after i had the re-chip, i had a grin on my face for about two days. Even now after i have upgraded to the bigger turbo, full milltek, FMIC etc I know the car has alot more power all the way to the redline, but looking back, that day was the most fun i have had with it.

Two questions:
What mileage has your scooby covered ? I also have an MY00 which needed over 8,500 miles to really loosen up.
Do you use SUL ?, can make quite a difference.
I was intially disappointed with my scoobs performance, but now with 11,000 miles and on SUL its a different car, particulary sharp on these frosty mornings.
That said I did once struggle to lose an old shape clio sport 172 from a rolling start...

I was initially slightly disappointed with the performance of my MY00. Coming from a 205GTi I was in the habit of revving the car hard rather than using the mid-range grunt, so it took me a while to adjust. To be honest though the scoob rarely gets driven in anger and is normally run on 95ron which doesn't help. I changed the backbox for an STi item which is internally the same but has a larger exit pipe, it will now pull hard to the redline instead of running out of puff at 5500rpm. On the odd occasion that I've put Optimax in and driven the car hard it has been damned impressive.
If, like me, you refuse to abuse the clutch on a regular basis and prefer to get rolling then bury the throttle, your 0-60 time will be around 6.5 - 7 seconds which ain't that far ahead of a hot hatch. Even so, I've left a Type-R (Integra?) from the lights and have never been troubled by anyone of a Max Power persuasion.
When I decide I must have more performance I'll just replace the backbox/downpipe, chuck in an ITG filter and start running on SUL. That should up the power to around 250bhp and will be cheaper than a PPP.

16v hit best form at top of rev range (7 - 8K).
(edited to say: well every 16v I have been in anyway)
I'd have thought turbo cars would see the most difference at mid range once the turbo has spooled up. Scoobys I have been in run out of puff at lower revs than the 16vs!

Thanks for the replies.
Sammy - is your full SS system on a MY00 and are you going to this meet on the 20th?
Dave - Cars done 14K and drives very smoothly. As yet haven't run it on SUL or Optimax.
