At a roundabout near bedford.
They Police car came flying round the corner 80+mph (chasing a sotlen car), I saw them comming and slamed on my brake tpo avoid a collision, the guy behind hit me but there is bascally no damage to my car.
The police cautioned us both (indicated we have nothing to worry about; it was just for their records). They checked all our details re insurance etc and everything was fine.
Have I done anything wrong?
I told the police the guy behind could not have avoided hitting me , so it's no ones fault, the cop sort of agreed but i have no idea what he wrote down.
They didn't even ask for ID, i just wonder if this was a paper exercise.
Cheers.

It isn't your fault. If someone goes into the back of you under any circumstances it is in law their fault. They were too close basically, even if they weren't, if you see what I mean

Police record all vicinity only accidents...ie As the police car was the cause of you braking hard and the driver to crash into you they are obliged to record it. You did nothing wrong. Bob

may £50 damage to his car, he gently touched my bumper.
I saw his point, waiting to pull out he got distracted by a police car going way beyond the 30mph limit, he was bound to hit me.
I don't understand why we both got cautioned, and back to my original question was it a paperwork exercise?
My sister got hit by a police car in persuit many years ago and she got a caution, though they didn't do anything (i.e no points or court appearance), maybe caution means we need to take a record?
Thinking about it,. when I whitnesed an accident last year the police cautioned me before taking a statement. I was a pedrestrian just saw this guy hit another car.

Relax you got nothing to worry about..if there was any damage to your car it would of been the persons fault who it you from behind anyway thats how the insurance would see it..its no difference if someone pulled out infront of you from a give way line, and you hit them.it would be the other drivers fault..i wouldnt worry about the police probably just looking for something to do HEHE..

Dumb question time....
So the police were chasing a stolen car and they noticed some bumpers getting intimate so they stopped to take statements. Or was there a team of following police cars to pick up the debris from the chase?

Being cautioned and a Police caution are two very different things with a confusingly similar name. The former is a legal formality and the latter is recorded and a lighter alternative to a criminal prosecution.

its still the persons fault who is behind.even though the person infront may not have any brake lights..its no different to as if u were slowing down but not applying your brakes and just leaving your foot off the gas pedal..the person behind would be at fault for hitting you..you should leave sufficent distance between you and the vehicle in front so you are able to react in an emergency stop.
