From the AutoExpress website:

"Turbo Boost For Alfa 147"

"Alfa Romeo is blasting back into the hot hatch arena with a race-bred turbocharged GTA version of the new 147. And it will leave owners of the Impreza WRX eating dust. Insiders at Milan-based Alfa have confirmed the car's chassis and handling technology will come as a result of the firm's involvement with the super production touring car category.
Under the bonnet, when it's unveiled next year, will be a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit – and with 220bhp on tap, it has 5bhp more than the flagship Subaru.

It uses the same cylinder block as the engine that powers the recently axed Fiat Coupé Turbo, but the Alfa version will be in tune with its sportier image and offer a more intoxicating drive. The engine is currently fitted to Alfa's Spider and GTV sports cars but isn't available to UK buyers.

The car will follow in the great tradition of Alfa hot hatches, the most famous of which was the Alfasud Cloverleaf Verde from 1982. The 'Sud was limited to 10,000 units, and the 147 GTA is also likely to be made in small numbers to boost desirability."

Should prove an "interesting" year for Subaru sales in 2001

Seems like everyone and their uncle are bringing out Scooby challengers - can only be good for performance car enthusiasts

Cheers

If they're putting all that power through the front wheels, it will be...... TORQUE STEER CITY!!!!

The 2-litre turbo (non-uk) Alfas are 4-cyl, the Fiat was/is a 5-cyl??

Same as what??

But as an ex alfa owner (145/156/GTV) Alfa CAN get 200bhp+ through the front wheels without torque steer. If it is real, it will be a stunning car!!

If it's anything like the GTV/Spider, handling will be "understeer, more understeer, ohmigoshimgoingstraighton" central. Admittedly without torque steer.

I seem to recall most journalists trying to get the back end of the GTV into play with absolutely no success whatsoever - no lift off oversteer, nothing.

No doubt SdB will correct me

Extra 5 bhp - wow - that's really gonna make me eat dust - and no AWD either.

Problem is, by the time you get the Alfa home from the dealership, the doors will have rotted off.
