Is there a light then?

Or is it a matter of looking for steam coming from the bonnet?

To be fair there's probably little point. I remember running a seperate Defi water temp gauge and it would go up and down in various situations (as you'd expect) At the same time the standard water temp gauge would sit like a rock in the same place whatever..

Been the same with every Jap car I've owned.

The gauges in modern cars are like this. If the temp gauge moved around in line with the actual temperature the dealers would get inundated with people wondering if there was something wrong with their car. It is the same with cars with a oil pressure gauges, they usual sit in the same place at all times unless there is a drastic rise or fall in pressure. Otherwise they would rise and fall all over the place during normal driving.

Maybe, but in the 60's and 70' and 80's we had proper working Oil Gauges - not sure whether dealers were inundated with complaints and worries?

I think it is all down to cost ..... a poxy gauge which is really a switch with a damped needle is a lot cheaper than a proper gauge.

My 1995 MX5 has an Oil Pressure Gauge which is a 'mickey-mouse' gauge - if there is Oil Pressure it sits nicely in the middle of the range. My 1970 Cortina had a gauge which would vary as it should with temperature and engine speed.

Are people really more stupid these days?

I am surprised that Subaru has gone down the route of reducing a gauge ... it was a drivers car after all.
