Just remember that many of the reg number listed on the commercial sites are still available from DVLA. All these companies are doing is listing the plates they can aquire, and adding a profit.
Although listed on other sites, I aquired P1 YOB from DVLA at a very reasonable price. I just wish I'd looked there for J8SHS before I bought it from a commercial site. Now I'll never know.

Adam,
I bought P1 YOB as a replacement for J8SHS, as someone incorrectly suggested he might know of a buyer for it. I decided to put YOB on as it seemed a shame to have it just sitting on retention. It's also a bit of fun, as attracts even more grins and pointy fingers than the car itself.
J8SHS is currently on my Wife's car, but I'll happily sell either reg if I received a reasonable offer.

You wanna try buying a Northern Irish reg as a pressie for someone so that it can be put on an imported car that is to be registered in England when it arrives at the end of Feb.
Talk about can of worms !!

SJobson,
AFAIK, when you transfer a new plate onto a car already registered, the original plate then becomes void, unless you put it on retention (which will cost you).
If you then transfer your new(private) plate to your next car, the DVLA issue a replacement number for your old car.
I asked this question to the DVLA when I changed mine, and I'm certain that was the answer they gave me.

Cheers - that was a good response! I had assumed that the plate was now void, and liable to be re-issued, but when I searched the DVLA-SOM site for it, it said it wasn't available, and David Yu of Evo magazine said that the original plate for his old 205GTI had gone back on the car when he sold it after (I think) 7 years, so it got me thinking.
Anyway, I shall keep the spare plates. They'll come in handy if I want to do a bank job

It is correct that the DVLA void the plate when you transfer a platye onto a car... but I have received the old numbers back on two occasions of doing this and a mate just received a Y plate back in the same way!
So keep the old plates as they most likely will be what you get when you transfer it back off....
ho ho JGM

Bit O/T, and maybe nobody knows the answer, but if you transfer your plate (e.g. J8SHS) to a car which is already registered, then transfer it off again when you sell it, does the original plate for that car go back on it?
Just wondering, because I've done exactly that, and wondered if I might need the old plates again when I sell...
[Edit - didn't mean to imply that I'd bought J8SHS - Doh!]
