When I bought my car, I also bought a personalised number plate from the dealer. I wasn't given any paperwork to show that I own the plate and the dealer tells me there wont be any. Is this correct? What happens if I decide to sell the plate but not the car, how do I pass ownership to somebody else?

Howard,

You will have a V5 form for the car, and it is possible to own a number plate 'separate' from the car. I used to have a company BMW (leased from MEVC) but owned the plate.

If you contact your local post office or Vehicle Registration Office they will sort it our for you. There is a form, but I cannot remember what it is called!
