What was the point in comparing a P1 to the base model 1.5 litre version? That was a joke. Subaru should tell them to f-off when they want an Sti to play with - what did they expect - this 150bhp 4 door base version is better than the 280 bhp 2 door P1 - I dont think so.
He basically said everything about the new car was fine .
Worst review ever, very unfair to Subaru I think.

Poor review. Was unbalanced and bias and said very little about the car.
The whole thing was about the move away from an iconic saloon to a hatchback without really examining what that entails.

Wasn't he just saying everything we were already thinking though? We knew the basic non-turbo version wasn't going to be up to much, I don't see why you are all getting hot and bothered about it!
I thought it was good to see it side by side with a P1 to see how the focus has changed over time. Power wise they weren't trying to compare the two, they did keep saying it's not the STI!
I disagree with the 5th gear bashing, I think it's got a lot better recently and it's still a car show about the cars rather than the personalities presenting it.

It was completely unbalanced and IMHO fifth gear should have reviewed the hatch and judged it however they saw fit.
Then at the end of the piece they should have gone into the competition details including a few minutes on the P1.
What they did was combine the two and this inevitably left a completely unfair comparison.
Hence the bashing

Most stupid comparison i've ever seen...why not wait until the STi is released to compare to a P1 and compare the base Impreza with its class rivals..Ford ..Seat etc.

Although I though comparing a 150BHP new Impreza with a P1 was a little biased in favour of the P1. I really think the point of the review was to show how Subaru have changed track in going for Mr. Average rather than Mr. Rally Wannabe.
Not as stlyish as a Civic. Not a good a drive as a Focus. Why does it need 4WD with just 150BHP. I think he was basically saying that Subaru have shot themselves in the foot by changeing the car so much.
Can't wait for the reviews of the new STI. Although it's going to have to be the best handling Subaru ever, and have 330BHP out of the box for me to consider buying one over say the new EvoX. I just can't get past the looks.

IMHO they weren't making the comparison, they were just emphasing the shift from rally bred racers to focus stalking shopping cart.
They did say the STI etc hadn't been released but added that it would only be available in limited numbers - Tiff opened the piece with that - as Subaru went for the mass market.
Ok they could have talked about how the WRX and STI are a strange one in the UK as we are the only market where these models make all the sales but apart from that he didn't compare it to the P1
What he did ask was it as good to drive as a focus - answer yes(ish) but made a good point that it was slower than the focus (not the P1) and that it didn't really need AWD which i'm inclined to agree on. The base model don't need it really and if you are trying to make a practical shopping cart a bigger boot has got to be better than AWD on a car that is going to Tesco and back.
5t.
Edit - posted at same time as STIlover and have to agree with that post too.

They only compared them in appearance, which in my opinion is fair enough! They never said it was a replacement for the P1 and didn't compare the performance between the two, the only car he actually compared it to was a Ford Focus IIRC! They also never said it was the top of the range one either, they stressed the STI would be still getting released next year and that would be quicker.
I still don't get the downer on the program. They reviewed a car we all said we didn't like the look of, and they said it was 'fine' but not as good looking as the P1. What's the problem with that?
