Default [B]Octane Boost...[B]

Hi Everyone,

Is it possible to fill up with 95ron unleaded and then use an Octane Boost to bring it up to V-Power 99ron or higher? Would you say this works out cheaper on fuel bills?

What is the best Octane Boost you can buy, and where from?

Cheers

ScoobyLee

I use Millers Octane Plus at around £3.50 a tank, but that's to bring 97 RON super up to a level that won't wreck my import STI engine. It's not cheaper than V-power or Tesco 99, but it does mean I don't have to worry so much about where to fill up.

Millers is very good stuff along with Silcolene pro boost, 1 litre for £15.00 or there abouts.

Theoretically 1 litre of pro boost should treat 300 litres of fuel.

But for best results, bang the lot in to one tank of fuel

Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wrecks your catalyst, though, doesn't it? That's what the Millers bottle warns about if you put more than one bottle into a tank.

Please read the label on Millers Octane Plus. It tells you that it will raise the Octane 3 points. ie .3 or 3/10 of an Octane. Not a lot.
There are two other Millers products to look at if you want to boost Octane.
Millers CVL Valve Lubricant and Octane Booster. Green label. 250mls. This is a lead replacement. (lead was a valve lubricant) 1 bottle treats 20 litres petrol.
Manganese based. "Adds up to 3 Octane (30 Points)"..................OR
Millers CVL MotorsportTurbo. Red label. 500ml bottle. Costs about £7.00. 1 bottle treats 20 litres of petrol and "Adds up to 4 Octane (40 Points)
None of these products will be CAT friendly I suspect.

Personally, after trying most of the things on the market, I have settled on Nitrous Formula (NF) 300mls per bottle and 1ml per litre adds 1 Octane, apparently. I normally run it just under 2mls per litre and I have found there is no benefit that I can detect once it reaches 3mls/litre.

My observations on what works and what is best are based on mapping cars, adding ignition and finding the DET point and comparing results on the same car (s) same fuel and different boosters.
The Millers CVL Turbo in the red label is every bit as good as the NF but needs nearly three bottles per full tank so it is very expensive to use.
the effect of Millers Octane Plus is hardly discernable.

@1ml/litre that should be around 99.4 and 2ml/l around 100.4 if the sales bumf is to be believed. Whatever it makes a measurable improvement over V-Power on its own.

Harvey

I don't doubt what you're saying, but here's what it says on the label of the Millers Octane Plus I have in my garage:

Boosts octane level of premium or super plus unleaded petrol by up to 2 octane numbers.

Benefits are increased by regular use. For cars NOT equipped with catalytic converters treatment rates can be doubled for even greater performance.

Normal treatment: One full bottle of Octane Plus treats 50 litres of unleaded petrol"

I wonder if we're talking about the same stuff

Is there a disadvantage for prolonged octane booster use?

"3 points" is different than "point 3" so it does actually mean it can raise the figure by up to 3 units. Whether it does or not I couldn't say.

The base stock quality of the fuel is the determining factor there, the less octane boosting additives the more you will be able to improve it with booster.

There's nothing on the label that says anything about octane points. though - it says 'up to 2 octane numbers'. Quite how they define 'up to' is a topic for debate, of course - but I still wonder whether we're talking about the same stuff:
