Good Grief - That was as easy a job as any I've ever done!
After 82,500 miles my rear brake pads were down to about 3 mm - so, I thought, time to change them.
Bought a new set from Subaru at £51 - yes, I can buy cheaper but you can't go far wrong with ones which have seen 82,500 miles and come with all new shims and brackets and stuff.
Anyway, they have been sitting in my garage for a couple of weeks now - lookingt at me!! I have been putting the job off because I didn't really know what awaited me after 82,500 miles and 7 1/2 years!!
Well, today I thought I had better get my 4rse in gear - its mild at 16 degrees, its still light at a reasonable hour (unlike tomorrow!) ..... so off I went like a right little Car Mechanic
I actually thought I was doing something badly wrong when, after literally 10 minutes I had the first side done (that included taking the wheel off and looking through the brake pad box at the shims plus taking some pictures of how it was before I started!)
The other side was literally 5 minutes!!
15 minutes to do both rear brake pads!! I'm shocked!! I could now do them both in about 8 minutes!!
No idea what a Dealer would charge?? Still no idea if something is missing - but I can't think of anything!
So I had time to do a full bleed through of all the braking system and also chucked in an Oil Change at the same time ................... so much time left that I serviced the wifes Swift too!!
God I'm goooooooooood

Right, i am going to bring my car round to you as my pads could do with changing. If they are not done in 15 mins i will charge you £100 for every minute it takes you after the 15 mins. Deal ?

I did replace the front pads and discs after 66,000 miles - adding the discs made it more time consuming.
But the rears, today, just pads as the discs are not that worn ..... it was an amazingly simple change, I know I am naturally good at Engineering and stuff but the ease of it left me gobsmacked!!
Anyone know what a Dealer/Specialist charges for a rear pad change??

If all I ever got was 'normal' drivers into the garage I wouldn't make a living!!
I mean - I can get 82,000 miles out of a Rear set of Pads, probably 160,000 miles out of the disc and 66,000 miles out of the Front Pads - I would need more work than that to see ends meet!!
Pete's Pad ..... sounds like a good place to put a mickey mouse rolling road and cocklink installation station Could make £1000's out of the geeks and gimps Could do some simple mapping too

you have to pre bake the pads pete at 200 degrees in an oven for 35 mins and then let them rest for a further 5 minutes before fitting. And you did not take out the engine turn it upside down and pour the oil in to stop air being trapped. I am a bit worried that you did not do this as recommended by Suabru UK. This would usually take at least 5 hours to do. A Subaru is not like any other car remember Pete, I feel that you should remove the pads and oil and start again with the correct procedure as above.

Had my rear pads changed on friday (2002 WRX). MOT and 50,000 mile service at the same time!
Main dealer charged £43.36 for the pads and £47.95 to fit them.
Mine have lastest 5 years - but only done 33,500 miles!!

I just knew there was something else - it was simply toooooo easy, for a special car like the Impreza I was sure there had to be more - and there is!!
I have just discovered that the new shoes should have been cycled through a heat up/rapid cool down shocking ... cooker and then freezer for 15 days. Then they should be placed in the calipers according to a very strict procedure .......... offside, inside - nearside, outboard - offside, outboard - nearside, inside BUGGER, BUGGER, BUGGER - now my Engine will sieze up in the next 25 miles and the gearbox will have mixed-up all its gears!!!

My mate has just told me that I should not have pushed the piston back in without cracking open the bleed nipple as pushing fluid backwards through the ABS Valves is not good ...... is he pulling my plonker??

Very early in the morning about 10 miles from my house I have to haul down from around 130 to 30 in one move - I always observe the lower limits - and that warms things up nicely for the motorway run when I agree that, with some roadcraft and judicious use of the gearbox, it is possible not to use the brakes. Indeed, on many occasions I have managed J10/M40 to J5/M4 via the M25 in early rush hour without touching the brake pedal once. The only thing you have to be prepared for is that the brakes are stone cold when you do use them, more so if it is has been raining as well!

I was taught that there were two fresh eggs under the pedals - one under the throttle and another under the brake pedal ...................... use this mentallity and you will get miles more per gallon (around 30mpg) and years/miles out of your braking system
It makes sense
