Might be the infamous strut problem, you would hear the rattle (or knocking) more when pulling away or coming to a stop. My 05 STI rear brake calipers worked loose from their mountings (fixed under warranty) which made a rattle. If you have changed the exhaust (excluding the Prodrive silencer which was already fitted to a WR1) it could be hitting off the diff. Or simply the jack needing tightened up. Hope you get to the bottom of it mate, nothing worse!

I had a harsh plasticy rattle from the back. Turned out to be plastic C pillar panel rattling on the rear glass. Was worse in cold weather (plastic harder?). Cured by putting a piece of cardboard under the bottom of the plastic cover to force it permanently against thne glass.
Another possibility is the rear seat belt reels. If its this then loosen bolt and move the mount slightly to see if that helps.

There is a rattle comes from the rear window...if you get in the back seat and pull the roof lining back a bit you will see a velcro thingy in the middle of the window(remove it) and there is also some plastic locating plugs at either side of the window cut these off with a stanley knive and the rattle/squeak should dissapear.
I have just had my rear struts replaced due to another knocking noise from the rear when setting off and stopping(changing gear) but the knock is still there but i am going to book it back in for further investigation..MY06 STI

I've got a rattle in mine...To my ear it sounds like the heat shield had a quick look under but it looks miles away !?!?!
Its a very tinny clanging that I get after accelerating hard in gear then lifting off the throttle and letting the car slow down at its own speed...
!?! trying to get powerstation to take a look, but they dont like email... !?!

passenger side rear often points to the exhaust and its mountings .... worth a thorough nose around maybe?

Unfortunatley, this is what virtually all dealers are like ... ive had this with subaru, bmw and mercedes!! you are much better off spending the time and effort yourself sourcing the issue, then telling them what to fix. On every occassion where dealers say they cant hear it, ive had to go there myself, put one of the mechanics in the car, and usually go no further than their own car park because the sound is so bl##dy obvious. They're just not interested in locating/investigating noises ....
