FQ 340 or Type-R?
My mate has jus picked his FQ340 up today,
Im just wondering which would be quicker, his or my 310BHP Type-R?
Mine is alot lighter than his, which should make it quite close which ever way it went.
I read on Google that his is 1400kgs...
What do you lot think?

They normally push out (the fq340) a bit more power than stated, plus its got better power delivery and more torque, it will be close but the FQ340 should be the quicker drivers car.

I found this.....
Mitsubishi Evo MR 340 | Long Term Tests | Car Reviews | evo
It says it run the 1/4 mile in 12.9 i ran a 13 flat altho i neva launched it.
Could be a close 1, but i think you are right, the Evo will have the edge

People are getting into the 11s on the Evo with simple mods and good driving.
One in the US has done high 10s on the standard turbo and engine with no nitrous, but lots of other mods including alcohol injection and 32 PSI.
So mod for mod, the Evo makes considerably more power and over a wider rev range. However, weight does come into it, and a genuine 310 BHP Type R would give a standard FQ340 a hare time indeed.

I would not agree jameswrx, I find an Evo just as much fun as an equivalent Scooby. The recent Evos and STIs seem to have converged in handling since 2005 - as the Evo has become more compliant, the STI has firmed up, has DCCD-A, stickier tyres even though of course it is quieter and heavier than the old GC8. I can see the appeal of the old GC8 cars, but I wouldn't say they are more fun as such. Some really do prefer the rawness of the older models though. For a road car, the fancy diffs on the newer STI and the GSR Evos result in some saying they do everything for you. I suppose that is true to an extent that a computerised diff with yaw sensors is balancing the chassis (and maximising the grip of all four tyres), so if you enjoy controlling grip at both ends of the car (depending on manual DCCD setting) at lower speeds then an old Type R on its original 205/50R16 tyres is for you, but if you are really into that then RWD on skinny tyres in the wet is surely more fun? Not my idea of fun personally, but a talkative and balanced chassis that can be fun below the sliding limit is my ideal for a road car. Subaru steering is absolutely dead in comparison to an Evo, so right away a lot of the appeal has gone for me.

my 98' import sti is 300bhp and weighs 1200kg
ive had a few plays with evo fqs i think 300 0r 320? and we were both neck and neck i always experience more powerfull cars with fcukwitt incompetent drivers and they cant keep up , once you start getting to 300-350bhp cars its mainly driver skill i think mate. on a track one might be faster by a second but on the road ?????????????????????

If the FQ340 is pro-rata quicker than my sons IX FQ320 then it should be the EVO but not by an enormous amount.
Chris's un-modified 320 gave 347 on Power Engineerings rollers recently.
The EVO has greater pulling power from lower revs than my 340 bhp 03 STi and is more responsive to the throttle. If only I could read the speedo and tach. without my reading glasses, I'd say it was a very desirable motor!

FQ 340 is years ahead in terms of technology so that's where my money is.
Sorry.

Hmm intresting view,
I went out in it tonight with him, we were 4 up in the car and it still felt torque'er than mine. altho it does have some turbo lag, which mine dosnt have.
I reckon when we race them down at the pod it will only b about a tenth of a second diffrence.

I went up against an fq340 in my type r some while back on a straight dual carriageway away from a set of lights. Got comprehensive beaten I'm afraid. In fact so much so I would say the evo was far from standard. Also my clutch was knackered and I think if I did the same now it would be closer - but I ran a Evo8 330 for 3 years and they are very quick, but I would say my near standard type r is so close to be un noticeable - at least in every day terms.
However this run in did demonstrate how good the evos are and by the way he pulled in front, depressingly so.

I can settle this debate right here and right now
Had 2 races against him tonight, i let him go from infront as i thought his was quicker
Well thats not true! i was stuck on him bumper, i had to back off cause i was gaining on him ever so slightly, but still i was gaining

John Banks :-)
Why did you opt for a 340 Evo and not the 360 Evo?
Curious as I'm thinking of purchasing an Evo as my next vehicle and cant decide which to get - I want a nearly new car......... not even going to consider the new Evo as they are just too heavy
I would decat, filter and remap and methonal mix - what could I expect to get with a 360 versus a 340?
(I currently own an sti5 (=bottomless money pit), Ecutek'd wrx04 and Brand new Forrester STI. (sti5 and wrx04 are now essentially track cars - I use the wrx04 when the sti5 is being repaired (i.e. new engine or brake discs - had to wait 7 weeks for last set of discs from AP!!)

I was going to buy a new JDM import and do the induction/exhaust/pump/remap to approx 400 BHP thing (any Evo IX will do this). However, I found a 4000 mile 6 month old FQ340 in excellent condition with lots of extras at a good price. FQ360 wasn't out then, but the only important differences are a fuel pump, sports cat and remap.

ok - so 360 isnt worth the premium if these are the only differences as I'd be remapping anyway and decatting and it costs very little to put an upgraded fuel pump in - though at that level of power maybe not required
