If your running the standard Map, or a Prodrive map you can use 97 RON petrol, but the ECU will retard the ignition because of the lower fuel grade. The engine will loose some power with less ignition advance.
V-Power is 99 RON and the best out there.

Super Fuels
Many of the large petrol companies have launched 'super fuels' - petrols and diesels that have a higher research octane level. These fuels are said to increase power in many vehicles, deliver less pollution than regular fuels and help to maintain a cleaner engine. Amongst these 'super fuels' are Tesco's Super Unleaded 99 Octane petrol, supplied by Greenergy, now sold at many stations across the UK and also BP's Ultimate 102 Unleaded which is currently the most advanced, high-performance petrol you can buy on UK forecourts.

If your car is still using the standard map, you can safely run it on 95 ron, anything higher, is a bonus, power wise.

MY experience
My WRX, 225bhp ran fine with Tesco 95, but the engine laboured with Tesco Super 99 - guess the Tesco 99 doesn't have the same cleaning agents as Shell V Power which is the best IMHO.
I kept trying Tesco 99, at different stations up and down the country and concluded it's cheap SUL and well CRAP!!!!
I didn't rate BP either (better than Tesco SUL), but Total SUL is quite good.
In Sumary the fuel quality of Tesco 99 suffers to achive 2 RON higher than the other supermarkets.
Just my option and experience, I would love to find V Power fuel that's cheaper but I found fuel consumption with T 99 to be very poor; even on same motorway run I was getting 3-5mpg less

TBH mappers favs are Optimax and then Tesco SUL. Remember RON rating isn't everything, pre map the best SUL i'd used was Esso which is only 97.
Tesco seemt o have a good product and are the only company to publish exactly what is in the juice. BP Ultimate is bobbins by comparison which underlines the 'more to it than RON' argument.
If you do run 95 though it will take quite a while before the ecu advances the ignition again because it just won't trust the fuel. Probably several tanks worth.

Super unleaded is totally fine... Ignore all of the fear mongers lol! Unless you've had the car specifiically mapped for 99/100 ron it will have NOOOOOOOOOOOOO problems on 97 SUL.

I think it's done to personal choice on a standard ECU map.
I've used both V-power and Tesco 99 on my ECUTEK ECU and to be honest (and this is an honest answer) my car is best suited to V-Power.
Not only do I get more pops and bangs out my RCM system but I see better MPG on VP too.
Thats my two pence worth anyway.
Scoobydavid, if I was you mate if you have 99 octane at your local pump at Tesco give that a go. Other wise add a shot of NF in the tank (60mls) and take it from there.
