I had an 04 CTR - useless apart from on a race track. VTEC was invented for economy not performance. Electric steering "jams" at low speed.

their torque is useless..

If you drive it right its very very rewarding, not lightening fast or massively torquey but when it all comes together not that slow. The old shape is a nicer car more ways then one!!

All round a very reliable almost bullet proof car. I am currently running about in a little VTI CRX Del Sol, sadly its not roof off weather.

had the Civic R on a 53 plate, great car, hard to get traction in the wet though, superb gearbox.

WOuld you not consider a tuned 205 GTI instead

Very easily sorted with new rods and quick shift, my gear change feels spot on now.

Just need to fix the engine

The handling was top notch to. But my 04 ctr is a more potent weapon obviously.

If you're keeping the Scoob for performance driving, why not look at something which is fun to drive but also economical ? I have a Skoda Fabia vRS which is running 180bhp and 312 lb/ft which sees the in gear 30-70 time matching STiPPP's and yet I can still get 65mpg on a steady run. Even en-route to work tonight I didn't hold back on a mix of A/B roads and m/way and averaged 45mpg. If you want something that looks a bit nicer then the Ibiza PD160 in a 3 door is more stylish. More in the CTR class though is the Leon which can be had in PD150 trim.

VAG diesels are superb for both economy and performance At least ry and blag a test drive in one before you commit your cash to a petrol alternative, they really are eye-openers
