...say that the UK sti is NOT a rival to the EVO VII ... they are too different (as I have always maintained.)
They conlude that there is not a tester amongst them that would not rather drive the evo ...... but to live with year after year, as an all-round package the STI is the better option.

Figures look okay but EVO VII was tested to 100 at 12.7.
Remove the Cats though and there will be little in it.
Funny how when Autocar tested the jap spec STi they said it was probably the more capable car that lost to the EVO VII on a technicality by a hairs breadth. Its amazing how two cats 5k price reduction and Mitsubishi threatening to pull their advertising can change your mind.
Just shows you what inconsistent rubbish they spout.

Autocars verdict was
"Not the quickest but the BEST Impreza yet".
I dont really think it could of got a much better write up. Putting its side by side performance figures with the old shape STI & 22B makes interesting reading.
UK STI STI 4 22B
0-60 4.9 4.6 5.0
0-100 13.5 12.3 13.0
30-70 4.7 4.8 5.0
So this apparently lardy underpowered UK STI has a quicker through the gears 30-70 than an STI 4 and 22B
Now add a PPP to this and all before will eat its dust , and with an offical warranty

30-70 is not that reliable depends upon how many gear changes needed etc which can explain an anomaly like why a lardy new shape WRX is faster than old

Autocar loves Evo's. (Read the last paragraph on their 10 best cars of 2001 article - takes a pop at Scooby drivers big style).
BTW - the brake test was done in damp conditions.

I must say that the figures produced by MITSI UK are more like being accurate 4.4 to 60 for the standard 7 and 4 for the vii 300 the only difference being a new exhaust and filter. As i have removed the cat and added a filter to mine it should be about the same as the 300 which i must say is more powerful than 300bhp as they run a higher boost, straighter exhaust etc than the 6, in comparison with a P1 the 7 is quicker simple as that, i had 2 P1's both de-catted and had trouble pulling away from a couple of my friends scoob's, no such problems now!!!! as for the new STI i can't wait to meet one !!!!!!!!! Still all superb cars though!!

M3 can go at anytime as soon as its fixed . I do have bids.
I agree with you on the 30-70. Just think how fast the UK STI would be if there was less gearchanges

Standard jap spec evo 7's are achieving over 300bhp on the rollers. The UK version evo7 will be running on lower emmisions and is therefore slightly down on power hence the uk 300 will achieve this figure with just a panel filter and exhaust.

If its the best Impreza yet,
how come the Impreza GT and WRX got 5 stars while it got only 4??
did they say anything about the price?
I'm amazed instead of appriciate the fact Subaru brings the STI and with such a great price they put it down with 4 stars, thats like Fabia and less than Mondeo, what are they thinking?

How about we all ring up Steve Sutcliffe and Chris Harris tomorrow to complain. Tell 'em we all read Auto Express. That really upsets them....

Not wanting to knock anyone there are some crazy claims on this thread about std Evo VII performance. Given the PWR of the car they defy the laws of physics. Pity the mag tests cant get close to those figures eh?

They got an average of 22.7 mpg during the test and with a 13.2 gallon tank this gives a range of "considerably less" than 300 miles. Actually it's 299.64 miles, so who's going to buy them a calculator?. On the front page of the test the 60-0mph time is shown as 3.1s (damp). On the next page the brakes test is shown as "surface dry", so which was it?
Intersting that "too much understeer" is noted and yet the Evo testers found that they could plant it and keep the faith!
